KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska opened the International Cultural Diplomacy Forum, emphasizing culture as a powerful language through which Ukraine explains itself to the world.
The annual forum brings together Ukrainian and international experts, diplomats, artists, researchers, government representatives and international organizations to discuss the future of cultural relations. This year’s agenda focused on cultural diplomacy as a form of soft power, with discussions on security, decolonization, countering Russian propaganda and Ukraine’s integration into the global cultural space.
Cultural diplomacy takes center stage
Zelenska said culture often becomes the first point of contact between people and another country. A book, song, film, exhibition or personal encounter may open a door long before official political language does.
According to Zelenska, culture allows Ukraine to speak to the world through emotions and shared human experience. This makes cultural diplomacy an important part of Ukraine’s international presence, especially at a time when the country is working to defend its identity and explain its reality to global audiences.
The forum positioned culture not as a secondary field, but as a strategic tool that can support international understanding, build solidarity and challenge distorted narratives.
Ukraine’s voice beyond formal diplomacy
In her speech, Zelenska underlined that culture can communicate across borders in a way that does not always require translation. She said Ukraine’s cultural voice can stand alongside professional diplomats on international platforms.
The message reflected a broader approach in which artists, writers, musicians, researchers and cultural institutions help carry Ukraine’s story abroad. Through cultural projects, performances, books, films and exhibitions, the country seeks to show not only the impact of war, but also the depth of its history, identity and creativity.
Zelenska’s remarks highlighted the role of culture in building empathy. While political statements may inform, cultural expression can make Ukraine’s experience more personal and emotionally understandable for international audiences.
Security, decolonization and propaganda on the agenda
Forum participants discussed cultural diplomacy in the context of Ukraine’s security environment. Topics included decolonization, resistance to Russian propaganda and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s place in the global cultural sphere.
For Ukraine, cultural diplomacy is not only about image-building. It is also connected to memory, identity and resilience. During the war, cultural institutions and civil initiatives have become important actors in explaining Ukraine’s history and countering narratives that seek to erase or distort it.
The forum also addressed how Ukraine can expand international cultural cooperation. Exhibitions, academic programs, artistic partnerships and cultural events were discussed as tools for strengthening the country’s global visibility.
A symbolic brooch drew attention
Zelenska’s outfit also drew attention in Ukrainian media. For the forum, she chose a dark eggplant-colored suit consisting of a wrap-style jacket and wide-leg trousers with pressed creases.
She completed the look with black pointed leather heels, gold earrings and a symbolic gold brooch pinned to the lapel of her jacket. The brooch, titled “Nezalezhna,” was created by Ukrainian brands Guzema Fine Jewelry and Gunia Project for the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
Its design was inspired by floral motifs from Ukrainian embroidered towels of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly elements of the Tree of Life. The symbol represents the connection between generations, the continuity of life and the layered structure of the universe.
Style as part of a diplomatic message
Zelenska’s public appearances are often read not only through fashion, but also through symbolism. At this forum, the restrained dark suit created a formal tone, while the gold brooch connected the visual image to Ukrainian cultural heritage.
This detail reinforced the message of the event: culture is not abstract, but carried through symbols, memory, craftsmanship and national identity. The brooch therefore worked as a visual extension of the forum’s main theme.
Zelenska wore her hair in soft waves with a side part and chose a natural makeup look. Still, the central message of the appearance was not style alone, but the way visual symbols can support cultural diplomacy.
Culture as Ukraine’s global language
The International Cultural Diplomacy Forum again placed Ukraine’s cultural voice at the center of international dialogue. It showed how culture can function as a bridge between societies, a means of resistance against propaganda and a platform for future cooperation.
Zelenska’s speech emphasized that Ukraine wants to be understood not only through political headlines, but also through literature, music, cinema, design, symbols and human stories.
For Ukraine, cultural diplomacy has become both a defense of identity and a call for international solidarity. The forum offered a platform to strengthen that message and to expand the country’s presence in the global cultural conversation.
