ANTALYA, Türkiye — Turkish black seed and oregano oils are being introduced to the U.S. market as a value-added herbal supplement product, reflecting rising demand for natural ingredients.

As interest in plant-based products continues to grow in the United States, Turkey’s production strength in black seed and oregano is being turned into a finished consumer product. Talya Bitkisel has developed Black Seed & Oregano Oil, a dropper formula made with black seed oil and Mediterranean oregano oil obtained from the 2026 harvest in Antalya.

U.S. demand for herbal supplements is growing

The U.S. herbal supplement market has continued to expand as consumers show stronger interest in natural and plant-based ingredients. Retail sales of herbal supplement products rose by 4.4 percent in 2023 and 5.4 percent in 2024, while consumer research shows that a large share of adults in the country use dietary supplements.

This growth has increased demand not only for raw botanical ingredients but also for practical, daily-use formats. Products known in the U.S. as “Turkish black seed oil” and “oregano oil” are among the plant-based ingredients attracting consumer interest.

Turkey stands out in two key plants

Turkey has significantly expanded its black seed production over the past decade. According to agricultural figures, black seed cultivation areas increased from 2,299 decares in 2012 to 108,029 decares in 2022. Production rose from 161 tons to 10,089 tons in the same period.

This means that black seed cultivation area increased nearly 47 times, while production grew more than 60 times. The number of provinces producing black seed also rose from five to 33, showing that the plant has become a much broader agricultural product in Turkey.

Production has continued to grow in leading centers. In Uşak, one of Turkey’s important black seed production areas, output rose from 2,510 tons in 2022 to about 3,500 tons in 2025.

Turkish oregano has global recognition

Alongside black seed, Turkey is also one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of oregano. Turkish oregano is recognized in international markets under the name “Turkish oregano.”

Turkey has 77 different oregano species and holds a strong position in global supply. In 2024, the country exported 18,600 tons of oregano and generated 62.3 million dollars in export revenue.

This production capacity gives Turkey an important advantage in the botanical ingredients market. However, sector representatives emphasize that the real economic value increases when raw materials are processed into finished products designed for specific markets.

From raw material to value-added product

Talya Bitkisel developed Black Seed & Oregano Oil by combining cold-pressed black seed oil from the 2026 harvest with Mediterranean oregano oil. The product is produced in Turkey and designed for U.S. consumer habits.

Talya Bitkisel founder M. Halis Ertaş said Turkey has major production potential in medicinal and aromatic plants, but exporting these products only as raw materials limits the value captured inside the country.

According to Ertaş, the aim is to process these plants in Turkey under defined quality standards and turn them into ready-to-use products suitable for target markets.

A dropper formula for daily use

Each serving of Black Seed & Oregano Oil contains 60 milligrams of cold-pressed black seed oil and 18 milligrams of Mediterranean oregano oil. The product also includes extra virgin olive oil and vitamin E.

The formula is presented in liquid form with a dropper. It is gluten-free, preservative-free and designed for practical daily use. The 30-milliliter bottle contains about 300 servings, with a recommended use of three drops per day.

Ertaş said the product was not developed with the claim that black seed oil and oregano oil are unknown in the U.S. market. Instead, the company focused on Turkey’s raw material strength, its own ingredient ratios and the practical use expectations of American consumers.

Packaging tailored to the target market

The company designed not only the formula but also the packaging and usage format according to the U.S. market. Dropper bottles are widely used in botanical oil products, making the format familiar for American consumers.

By processing black seed and oregano in Turkey and presenting them as a finished supplement product, Talya Bitkisel aims to move beyond raw material exports and create higher added value.

The launch also reflects a broader opportunity for Turkey’s medicinal and aromatic plant sector. As global demand for natural ingredients grows, producers that combine agricultural capacity with branding, quality standards and market-specific product design can gain stronger positions in international markets.
