RODYNSKE, Ukraine — The wife of fallen Ukrainian defender Serhii Volodymyrovych Serdiuk has asked for his story to be told and his memory preserved as a soldier who gave his life defending Ukraine.

Serhii Serdiuk was born on August 17, 1978, in Donetsk region. He was a husband, the father of two sons, a close relative to his family and a friend to those who knew him in civilian life. After the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, he joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders and served in the 97th Battalion of the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Family asks that his memory be preserved

Serhii’s wife, Yuliia Viktorivna Serdiuk, appealed to the editorial office with a request to publish the story of her husband’s life, service and memory. She said the family wants him to be remembered not only as a name on a list of the fallen, but as a living person: a husband, father, son, friend and defender of Ukraine.

In her appeal, Yuliia Serdiuk emphasized that, for his children, Serhii was more than a father. He was the person who gave them a sense of home, support and protection.

“For me, Serhii will forever remain my husband and the father of our children. For his sons, he is their dad. For his relatives, he is a close person. For his friends, he is someone they will remember. For Ukraine, he is a defender who gave the most precious thing for his country and for the future of his children,” the family’s appeal says.

Life in Donetsk region

Serhii Serdiuk was born and raised in Donetsk region. According to the memorial page of the Pokrovsk District State Administration, he was born in the city of Rodynske, Pokrovsk district, Donetsk region. He studied at General Education School No. 35 and later at Vocational School No. 80, where he trained as an underground electrical fitter.

In civilian life, Serhii worked, built a family, raised his sons and remained, for those close to him, a person who brought a sense of reliability. Friends and relatives remember him warmly: each person has their own memories of conversations, meetings, jokes and ordinary days that became especially precious after his death.

Service in the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade

After the start of the full-scale war, Serhii stood up to defend Ukraine. He served in military unit A0414 as part of the 97th Battalion of the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Memorial materials and the electronic petition state that Serhii Serdiuk held the military rank of sergeant and served as a squad commander in a machine-gun platoon. This matches the information provided by his family.

Serhii’s service involved difficult combat missions in Donetsk region. He defended Ukraine, his family, his children and the future of the state.

Missing near Terny and later confirmed killed

On November 28, 2023, Serhii Serdiuk went missing while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Terny in Kramatorsk district, Donetsk region. His death was later officially established.

According to the memorial page of the Pokrovsk District State Administration, official confirmation of his death came on August 12, 2024. In August 2024, the defender was buried in Donetsk region.

For the family, the period of waiting became a separate pain: first uncertainty, then official confirmation of the loss. In her appeal, Serhii’s wife underlined that his children are now growing up without their father beside them, but with the memory of him.

Petition for the Hero of Ukraine title

An electronic petition No. 22/235534-еп was published on the official website of the President of Ukraine, requesting that Serhii Volodymyrovych Serdiuk be awarded the title Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

The author of the petition is listed as Yuliia Viktorivna Serdiuk. In the appeal, she asked that her husband be awarded the Hero of Ukraine title posthumously with the Order of the Gold Star. The petition states that Serhii was a sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a squad commander in the machine-gun platoon of the 60th Brigade, 97th Battalion, military unit A0414.

The petition was published on October 14, 2024. It collected 6,678 votes out of the required 25,000 and has the status “Not supported,” as the signature collection period ended without reaching the required threshold.

Even so, for the family, the memory of Serhii is not measured only by the number of votes. His life, service and death remain part of the wider story of Ukraine’s resistance.

“His story should not end with him”

Yuliia Serdiuk is asking that the memory of her husband be preserved not only in documents, but also in human history. She writes that Serhii’s children will no longer be able to come to their father, embrace him, hear his voice or receive his advice at important moments in life.

That is why the family wants him to be remembered as a person with a family, dreams, love, memories and a life that he gave while defending Ukraine.

Serhii Serdiuk was a husband, father, son and friend. For Ukraine, he remains a defender who died while carrying out a combat mission.

May the memory of Serhii Serdiuk be eternal.
