WASHINGTON, United States — U.S. President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, calling on both sides not to violate the arrangement.
The announcement came as energy infrastructure has remained one of the most sensitive fronts in the war. Power plants, refineries, gas facilities and transmission lines have repeatedly been targeted, raising concerns over civilian life, fuel supplies and winter energy security.
Trump announces immediate ceasefire
Trump said the energy ceasefire would take effect immediately and claimed both sides had accepted the arrangement.
In his statement, Trump said:
“Effective immediately, there is an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it.”
The U.S. president did not provide detailed information on the scope of the ceasefire, monitoring mechanisms or possible consequences in the event of violations.
Energy infrastructure at the center
The term “energy ceasefire” is understood to refer to a halt in attacks on facilities such as electricity plants, oil refineries, natural gas infrastructure and other strategic energy sites.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power and heating infrastructure during the war. Ukraine, meanwhile, has carried out strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy logistics facilities, arguing that such targets support Moscow’s war capacity.
A mutual pause in these attacks could reduce pressure on civilian energy systems, especially as winter approaches.
Details remain unclear
While Trump said both sides agreed to the ceasefire, the first announcement did not include a detailed roadmap. It remains unclear how the ceasefire would be verified, which facilities would be covered and whether military-linked energy assets would be treated differently.
Diplomatic observers say these questions will be central to whether the arrangement becomes a real de-escalation step or remains a political statement.
A critical issue before winter
Energy security has become a major concern for Ukraine during the colder months. Previous attacks on the country’s electricity grid caused large-scale outages and disrupted heating, water supply and public services.
If implemented, an energy ceasefire could help reduce risks for civilians and allow repairs to damaged infrastructure. However, any violation could quickly undermine confidence between the parties.
Diplomatic pressure continues
Washington has recently increased diplomatic efforts around limited ceasefire options rather than a full peace agreement. Energy infrastructure, Black Sea security and grain shipments have been among the partial arrangements discussed in recent diplomacy.
For now, the success of the ceasefire will depend on whether Moscow and Kyiv publicly clarify their positions and whether attacks on energy targets actually stop on the ground.
