TEHRAN, IRAN — Iran’s Assembly of Experts has reached a majority consensus on the next Supreme Leader following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, though the successor's identity is currently being withheld.

The selection process for the new leader, governed by the 88-member Assembly, occurs amidst heightened regional tensions and explicit military threats from Israel directed at the council members involved in the decision. According to EuroNews, while a majority agreement has been secured, certain "procedural hurdles" remain to be resolved before a formal public announcement is made.

Consensus reached despite procedural hurdles

Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, a member of the Assembly of Experts, informed the Mehr news agency that intense efforts led to a "determined and common view" on the successor. This sentiment was echoed by another member, Mohsen Haidari, who told the ISNA news agency that the "most suitable candidate" has been approved by the majority.

Despite the agreement, Hojatoleslam Jafari noted that the delay in announcing the third leader of the Islamic Republic remains a difficult period for the nation. Under the Iranian Constitution, the Assembly holds the sole authority to appoint the highest religious and political office in the country.

Israeli military issues direct threat to Assembly

As the council convened to finalize the leadership transition, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued a stark warning via social media. In a Persian-language post on the X platform, the IDF warned that anyone participating in the meeting to choose a successor could be targeted. "We will not hesitate to target you as well," the message stated, further complicating the security environment in Tehran.

This warning follows the February 28, 2026, air strike in Tehran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had served as Supreme Leader for 37 years. The assassination is widely regarded as the spark for the broader conflict currently impacting much of the Middle East.

Speculation centers on Mojtaba Khamenei

While the official name remains classified, 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late leader, has emerged as a prominent candidate. Although he has never held an elected office or participated in a public vote, he remains an influential figure within Iran's political and security elite.

Analysts suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei maintains deep ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and was part of his father's inner decision-making circle. A potential ascension by the younger Khamenei would likely signal a continuation of the hardline conservative path for the Tehran administration, potentially stalling any near-term diplomatic negotiations with Western powers.
