TIRANA, ALBANIA — Turkish national wrestler Nesrin Bas claimed the gold medal in the women's 68-kilogram category at the European Wrestling Championships in Tirana after her opponent withdrew due to injury.

This victory marks the second senior European championship title for the young athlete, further cementing her status as one of Turkey's most promising and dominant figures in international women's wrestling.

Dominant path to the final

Bas demonstrated a superior performance from the moment she stepped onto the mat in Albania. In her opening match, the national athlete faced Sweden's Tindra L. Sjöberg. According to Anadolu Agency reports, Bas overwhelmed her opponent, securing a commanding 11-0 technical superiority victory to easily advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, she squared off against Alina Shevchenko, who was competing as an independent athlete. Maintaining her aggressive and tactical approach, the Turkish representative defeated Shevchenko with a 12-1 technical superiority score, booking her ticket to the gold medal match.

Final walkover and securing gold

The highly anticipated championship bout was set to feature Bas against another independent athlete, Alina Shauchuk. However, the final showdown did not take place. Shauchuk suffered an injury that prevented her from taking the tatami, resulting in Bas being declared the winner by forfeit. Consequently, the gold medal was officially awarded to the Turkish wrestler without a final contest.

A growing legacy in international wrestling

This latest achievement adds to an already impressive resume for the national athlete. Bas previously won gold in the same 68-kilogram category at the 2024 European Championships held in Bucharest, Romania. With the Tirana victory, she has now doubled her European championship titles at the senior level.

Her success is built on a strong foundation laid in youth categories. The national athlete's record includes two European championships in the U23 category. Furthermore, Bas holds a silver medal from the Senior World Wrestling Championships and has made history by reaching the finals four times at the U23 World Championships, where she successfully captured three gold medals.
