KYIV, UKRAINE — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukrainian military experts are operating in several Middle Eastern countries, where they have successfully downed Iranian-made drones, including Shahed and jet-powered models.

According to reports from Anadolu Agency (AA), Zelenskyy stated that these operations have significantly contributed to strengthening the air defense capacities of partner nations. By sharing real-world combat experience, Ukrainian specialists are helping these countries implement modern defense systems capable of neutralizing Iranian aerial threats, which have become a centerpiece of regional security discussions.

Strengthening regional air defense

Zelenskyy emphasized that the presence of Ukrainian experts abroad is not merely for training or exercises but involves active operational support. He confirmed that Ukrainian personnel have shown local forces how to utilize interceptors effectively against Shahed drones. "Did we destroy Iranian Shahed drones? Yes, we did. Did we do it in just one country? No, in several. I think this is a success," Zelenskyy said during a briefing with journalists.

The President also highlighted the successful interception of jet-powered drones, noting that this experience proves Ukraine's defensive strategies are effective against evolving technology. He added that the transition to the serial production of interceptor aircraft specifically designed to destroy jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is now only a matter of time.

Strategic energy and security agreements

The cooperation extends beyond immediate military support, as Ukraine has reportedly signed 10-year security and cooperation agreements with three countries in the region. These pacts involve joint efforts between Ukrainian companies and the armed forces of those nations to protect energy infrastructure and develop missile defense systems.

In return for this military expertise, Ukraine is securing critical resources. Zelenskyy mentioned that some agreements include the supply of crude oil and refined petroleum products. He specifically noted that security talks are ongoing with Oman, while contacts continue with Kuwait and Bahrain to build upon existing agreements regarding energy security and mutual support.

Diplomatic outlook and Russia negotiations

Regarding the broader conflict with Russia, Zelenskyy suggested that a trilateral meeting could be on the horizon if Moscow chooses to de-escalate. He identified the period between April and June 2026 as a critical window for diplomacy. "If Russia chooses the path of de-escalation, I believe a trilateral meeting will take place," he stated, adding that international partners might try to organize such a dialogue before the summer.

However, the Ukrainian leader warned of a "diplomatic deadline" linked to the United States internal political cycle. He believes the U.S. will focus heavily on its upcoming elections starting around August 2026, leaving limited time for intense diplomatic pressure. Zelenskyy concluded by stressing the importance of the upcoming NATO summit, calling for an "unprecedented and game-changing" event that could potentially lead to a decisive victory for collective security.
