MOSCOW, Russia — Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow and several Russian regions, killing at least four people and targeting energy and industrial infrastructure.

According to Karar, the overnight operation targeted Moscow, the surrounding region, Crimea, the Black Sea, the Azov Sea and multiple Russian regions. Russian authorities said hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted, while local officials reported deaths in the Moscow and Belgorod regions. Reuters reported that at least four people were killed, including three in the Moscow region and one in Belgorod, in what it described as Ukraine’s biggest drone attack on the Russian capital in more than a year.

Moscow region hit by major drone wave

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones during the overnight attack. The Guardian, citing Russian officials, reported that 556 drones were intercepted across multiple regions, while Reuters said Russian authorities later reported more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones downed over a 24-hour period.

The Moscow region was among the areas most heavily affected. Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman was killed after a drone struck a house in Khimki, north of the capital. In the village of Pogorelki, drone debris reportedly fell on a construction site, killing two more people.

India’s Embassy in Moscow confirmed that one of those killed was an Indian citizen. Russian officials also said several people were injured in the wider Moscow region as debris damaged homes, construction areas and nearby infrastructure.

Belgorod also reports a fatality

The Belgorod region, which borders northeastern Ukraine and has frequently been targeted during the war, also reported one death. Russian authorities said the fatality was linked to the same wider wave of Ukrainian drone attacks.

Belgorod has been one of the Russian border regions most exposed to cross-border strikes, shelling and drone attacks since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. However, the scale of the latest operation, which included Moscow and other deeper Russian regions, has increased the political and military significance of the attack.

Russia accused Ukraine of targeting civilians. Kyiv has generally argued that its long-range strikes are aimed at military, energy and industrial infrastructure supporting Russia’s war effort.

Zelenskyy defended the strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the attacks, saying they were a response to Russia’s continued war and strikes on Ukrainian cities. The Financial Times reported that Zelenskyy called the drone strikes on Moscow “entirely justified” after recent Russian attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian areas.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian drones had reached more than 500 kilometers inside Russian territory, passing through heavily defended airspace. He framed the attacks as a message to Moscow that Russia must end the war it started.

Ukraine has repeatedly warned that Russian attacks on civilian areas and critical infrastructure would be met with deeper strikes inside Russia. Kyiv has also expanded its domestic drone production and long-range strike capabilities over the past year.

Energy and industrial sites targeted

Ukraine’s SBU security service said the operation targeted a Moscow-area oil refinery and two pumping stations. Reuters reported that Ukraine also claimed to have struck facilities linked to Russia’s oil infrastructure and weapons production.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin acknowledged damage near an oil and gas refinery and in nearby residential areas. However, he said the refinery’s production capacity and technological infrastructure were not affected.

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy facilities, including refineries, fuel depots and logistics infrastructure. Kyiv says these strikes are designed to weaken Russia’s ability to finance and sustain the war.

Kyiv cites Russian attacks on Ukraine

Ukrainian officials linked the Moscow attack to Russia’s recent large-scale strikes on Ukrainian cities. The Financial Times reported that Zelenskyy cited Russia’s continuing attacks and said Ukraine’s response was aimed at increasing the cost of the war for Moscow.

According to the same report, Russia recently launched thousands of drones and numerous missiles and guided bombs against Ukraine, causing dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Ukrainian officials have said such attacks show that Moscow is not seeking de-escalation.

Russia, in turn, says Ukrainian long-range drone attacks are an escalation and has threatened further retaliation.

Long-range drone warfare expands

The latest operation shows how central drones have become to the war. Both Russia and Ukraine now use large numbers of unmanned aerial systems to strike targets far behind the front lines.

Moscow has been targeted before, but attacks of this scale remain relatively rare. The Moscow Times reported that Russian air defences were repelling a large drone attack on the capital region from the early morning hours, with infrastructure facilities among the reported targets.

For Ukraine, long-range drones offer a way to pressure Russia’s military and economic infrastructure without relying only on missiles. For Russia, the attacks expose vulnerabilities even around the capital, despite dense air defence coverage.

Diplomacy remains stalled

The strikes came as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled. A temporary pause and prisoner exchange efforts have not produced a broader ceasefire, while both sides continue to intensify attacks.

Analysts say Ukraine’s ability to strike Moscow and other deep Russian targets is part of a strategy to make the war more costly for the Kremlin. Russia, meanwhile, continues to launch missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities, energy facilities and military targets.

The latest drone wave is likely to deepen concerns that the war is entering a more dangerous phase, with both sides increasingly able and willing to strike far beyond the front line.

For now, neither Moscow nor Kyiv appears ready to reduce military pressure. The growing use of long-range drones suggests that the conflict’s impact will continue spreading beyond the battlefield and into major cities, infrastructure networks and civilian life.
