Putin threatens to cut Ukraine's Black Sea access over tanker attacks
Following attacks on tankers in the Black Sea, Putin warned he might sever Ukraine's maritime access as a "radical solution" to stop piracy.
WISE NEWS PRESS / MOSCOW, Russia — Nov. 3, 2025
Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to completely cut off Ukraine's access to the Black Sea following a series of attacks on tankers believed to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet."
Tensions have escalated in maritime waters after two tankers were hit on Nov. 28, followed by another reported attack on Dec. 2 within Turkey's jurisdiction. Speaking to Russian media, Putin labeled the incidents as "piracy" and proposed a drastic countermeasure. "The most radical solution is to cut off Ukraine's connection to the Black Sea, so that piracy will become impossible in principle," he stated.
Targeting the 'shadow fleet'
The tankers targeted are suspected to belong to the fleet Russia uses to bypass Western sanctions. While Ukrainian officials claimed responsibility for the Nov. 28 attacks, they denied involvement in the Dec. 2 incident.
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine's Foreign Ministry, suggested the latest event might be staged by Russia, noting it would be "pointless" for Ukraine to attack a vessel heading to Georgia with sunflower oil.
Turkey condemns attacks
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed concern over the escalating violence against merchant vessels. "We cannot in any way excuse these attacks that threaten navigation, life, and environmental safety, especially in our own exclusive zone," Erdoğan said, highlighting the risks posed to regional stability.
