Trump's envoys meet Putin in Moscow to discuss Ukraine peace deal
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as Zelenskyy signals optimism about ending the war.
WISE NEWS PRESS / MOSCOW, Russia — Dec. 2, 2025
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump, have traveled to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a bid to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
The meeting, which began later than scheduled on Tuesday, comes on the heels of discussions between US and Ukrainian officials in Florida. Ahead of the talks, Putin stated that Europe's demands were "unacceptable," adding that while Russia does not want war with Europe, it is "ready to fight."
Zelenskyy sees peace closer than ever
Speaking during his first official visit to Ireland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy struck an optimistic tone, saying, "We are closer to ending the war than we have ever been." He acknowledged that while details of the peace plan still need work, the US is taking serious steps to resolve the conflict.
The White House had previously expressed strong optimism about reaching an agreement.
Revised peace plan on the table
The discussions center on a revised version of the 28-point peace plan Washington presented to Kyiv in November. Initially criticized for favoring Russian demands, the plan was amended during meetings in Geneva with European leaders to address EU and NATO concerns.
While Putin has conditioned a ceasefire on Ukraine’s withdrawal from territories claimed by Moscow, Zelenskyy maintains that territorial integrity remains the "hardest" issue, insisting Ukraine will not cede land. European leaders, including French President Macron, remain cautious, citing a lack of visible will from Russia for a ceasefire.
