LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have returned to Britain with their children after six years in the United States, beginning a new period of family life in the UK without resuming their former roles as working royals.

The family is believed to have travelled privately from California and landed at Birmingham Airport on Wednesday, 26 August. Their children, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet, are expected to begin attending school in Britain in September. Reuters and The Associated Press also reported the family's arrival and confirmed that the couple will remain non-working members of the Royal Family.

Family arrives in Birmingham from California

BBC News reported that Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet arrived in Birmingham shortly before midday after flying privately from California.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to discuss the family's arrival, saying it was not a matter on which they would comment.

According to the BBC, no visible police presence was observed as the family left the airport. Flight-tracking information cited by The Associated Press showed that a private charter flight from Van Nuys, California, arrived at Birmingham International Airport at 11:56 a.m.

The arrival follows the unexpected announcement last week that the Sussex family intended to spend an extended period in Britain after more than six years based primarily in California.

The decision attracted considerable attention because Harry and Meghan had built their lives and business activities in the United States after stepping away from royal duties in 2020.

Harry and Meghan will not return to royal duties

The move does not represent a return to official royal life.

Harry and Meghan are not expected to carry out engagements on behalf of King Charles III, live in a royal residence or receive the status they held before leaving their positions as senior working members of the Royal Family.

Reuters reported that the arrangement agreed after their departure from royal duties remains unchanged. The family will instead live privately outside London while maintaining their home in Montecito, California.

The Associated Press similarly reported that the Sussexes plan to live in a private, non-royal residence and will continue pursuing their own professional and charitable work.

BBC reporting has suggested that the family is expected to settle at a private property in the Cotswolds.

The return therefore appears to be primarily a personal and family decision rather than an institutional change within the monarchy.

Archie and Lilibet will attend school in Britain

One of the most significant practical changes concerns the couple's children.

Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have been enrolled at British schools and are due to begin classes in September. Their school locations have not been disclosed, in keeping with the family's efforts to protect the children's privacy.

The decision means both children will spend substantially more time in the country where their father grew up.

Harry has repeatedly spoken about wanting his children to develop a connection with Britain and his side of the family.

The children previously lived mainly in California and had relatively limited contact with the wider Royal Family following their parents' departure from the UK.

Their return is therefore likely to create more opportunities for contact with their grandfather, King Charles III, as well as other relatives, although relations between some members of the family remain strained.

King Charles was informed shortly before the announcement

The Sussex family's decision also surprised members of the Royal Family.

According to British media reports, King Charles was only informed of the planned move shortly before it became public. Reuters reported that the King learned of the decision only days before the announcement.

Harry, Meghan and their children had visited Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove in July.

That meeting was significant because it allowed the King to spend time with Archie and Lilibet after a long period in which he had rarely seen his grandchildren in person. AP reported that it was their first face-to-face meeting with Charles since 2022.

The move reportedly was not discussed during that July visit.

Nevertheless, the family's physical return to Britain could make private meetings with the King easier, particularly as Charles continues to receive treatment for cancer.

Harry has previously expressed a desire for reconciliation with his family and for his children to spend more time with their grandfather.

Security remains a sensitive issue

Security has long been one of the central disputes surrounding Harry's relationship with Britain.

After Harry and Meghan stopped working as senior royals, the automatic level of taxpayer-funded police protection previously provided to them was withdrawn.

Harry challenged the security arrangements through the courts but lost his legal battle over the decision.

The issue became particularly important because Harry had previously said concerns over his family's safety made it difficult for him to bring Meghan and the children to the UK.

The British government has maintained that protection decisions involving members of the Royal Family and other high-profile individuals are made through a formal risk-assessment process.

The Home Office has said the UK's protective security system is designed to be rigorous and proportionate, while declining to disclose individual arrangements for security reasons.

The family's return has therefore renewed questions over what level of protection they will receive while living in Britain. No detailed public arrangement has been announced.

Return could reshape relations with the Royal Family

Harry and Meghan left Britain in 2020 after a period of intense public and media attention.

They subsequently settled in Montecito, California, pursued commercial projects and spoke publicly about their experiences within the monarchy.

Their relationship with senior members of the Royal Family deteriorated following interviews, documentaries and Harry's memoir Spare.

Relations between Harry and his father have shown some signs of improvement, particularly following the recent family meeting at Highgrove.

His relationship with Prince William, however, is still widely reported to be difficult. Reuters said the brothers remain on poor terms despite the recent improvement in Harry's relationship with Charles.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have also been informed about the Sussexes' return, according to the BBC.

Whether living in the same country will eventually produce a broader family reconciliation remains unclear.

Invictus Games give Harry another reason to be in Britain

Harry's return also comes ahead of a major event closely connected to his charitable work.

Birmingham is due to host the Invictus Games next year, an international sporting competition founded by Harry for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans.

Harry visited Britain in July to promote preparations for the Games.

David Wiseman, the Invictus Games Foundation's head of programmes and strategy, welcomed news that Harry would again be based in Britain and said his presence could benefit the organisation ahead of the Birmingham event.

The family's return could therefore allow Harry to spend more time on UK-based charitable activities while remaining outside official royal duties.

For now, the Sussexes' new chapter in Britain is defined by three clear elements: their children will attend school in the UK, the family will live privately rather than within the royal establishment, and Harry and Meghan will continue their independent lives without returning as working royals.

After six years in California, however, their presence in Britain is likely to bring renewed attention to their relationship with King Charles, Prince William and the future dynamics of the Royal Family.
