Experts warn of Seasonal Affective Disorder as winter sets in
Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Şimşek highlights the impact of reduced sunlight on mental health, urging early awareness and lifestyle changes to combat winter depression.

Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Şimşek, Head of the Psychology Department at Istanbul Rumeli University, warned that reduced sunlight and physical inactivity during winter months significantly impact mental health, triggering Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
As daylight decreases and cold weather limits social activities, many individuals experience mood shifts. Experts state that for some, these changes go beyond temporary fatigue, manifesting as SAD—a condition characterized by persistent loss of motivation, sleep disturbances, and a decline in interest toward daily life.
The importance of early awareness
Prof. Dr. Şimşek emphasized that while low energy is often dismissed as a seasonal transition, it must be taken seriously if it diminishes quality of life. "Early awareness is the most effective way to spend the winter months in a healthy and balanced manner," Şimşek stated, noting that small lifestyle adjustments can create a significant impact.
Strategies to combat winter depression
To maintain mental well-being, Prof. Dr. Şimşek recommended increasing exposure to sunlight to boost serotonin levels, which regulates mood and energy. Key recommendations include:
-
Regular Exercise: Short walks or simple home workouts to reduce stress levels.
-
Sleep Hygiene: Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule to protect the biological rhythm.
-
Social Interaction: Keeping in touch with social circles to counter the isolation caused by seasonal shifts.
Call for professional and social support
Experts suggest that mental health protection should extend beyond individual efforts. Improving lighting conditions in workplaces and educational environments, along with strengthening social support mechanisms, plays a vital role in mitigating the effects of SAD.
Prof. Dr. Şimşek concluded by stating that while sunlight, movement, and balanced nutrition are natural protectors, those experiencing severe symptoms should seek professional help from mental health experts. "The foundation of a healthy society consists of individuals who are balanced both mentally and physically," he added.
