ANKARA, TURKEY — Demand for teeth whitening increases during the summer social season, but experts warn that the procedure should be planned at the right time and only after a dental examination.
Assistant Professor Özge Mimir, Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at Üsküdar University Faculty of Dentistry, said teeth whitening can help people feel younger, healthier and more confident, but it is not suitable for every patient. Mimir emphasized that people with active cavities, advanced gum disease, severe enamel loss or uncontrolled dentin sensitivity should first receive treatment for these problems before considering whitening.
Summer events increase demand for whitening
Summer is a season of weddings, graduations, holidays and social gatherings. People often take more photos, spend more time in public settings and pay closer attention to their appearance during this period.
Mimir said smile aesthetics strongly influence facial perception and personal confidence. Whiter teeth can contribute to a more youthful, healthy and well-groomed appearance, which is why many people seek whitening treatments before summer events or vacations.
However, specialists warn that cosmetic expectations should not override oral health needs. A brighter smile may be desirable, but the safety and suitability of the procedure must be evaluated first.
Dental examination should come first
Teeth whitening may be a suitable option for people whose oral health is generally good and whose teeth have discoloration caused by tea, coffee, tobacco use or aging.
But Mimir said the decision should be made after a clinical dental examination. Whitening agents may worsen sensitivity or cause discomfort if underlying problems are present.
Patients with untreated cavities, advanced periodontal disease, serious enamel loss or unmanaged dentin sensitivity should first complete the necessary dental treatment. Whitening is usually postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well.
The key message is that teeth whitening should not be treated as a quick cosmetic purchase. It is a dental procedure that must be planned according to the patient’s oral condition, expectations and risk factors.
Professional and home whitening are different
Professional in-office whitening is performed under dentist supervision and usually uses whitening agents with higher effectiveness. This allows dentists to achieve faster and more predictable results in suitable cases.
Home whitening systems are different. They generally use custom-made trays and whitening agents with lower concentrations. These systems should also be provided and monitored by a dentist. The patient must be instructed on how to use the trays, how long to apply the gel and when to attend follow-up appointments.
Mimir said both in-office and dentist-supervised home whitening can be effective in appropriate cases. However, products bought online and used without professional guidance may damage tooth enamel, irritate gums or cause excessive sensitivity.
For this reason, whitening treatment should be planned and monitored by a qualified dental professional.
Social media methods may damage enamel
Social media frequently promotes whitening methods using baking soda, lemon, activated charcoal or other abrasive materials. Experts warn that many of these methods are not scientifically supported.
Mimir said such practices may create a short-term feeling of whiteness, but they can cause long-term problems, including enamel wear, increased sensitivity and irregular tooth surfaces.
Acidic and abrasive substances may remove surface stains temporarily, but they can also weaken the protective outer layer of the tooth. Once enamel is damaged, the problem may be difficult or impossible to reverse.
This can lead to sensitivity to cold, hot or sweet foods and may make teeth more vulnerable to future discoloration. Instead of uncontrolled methods, patients should choose dentist-approved treatments that are safe, measured and suitable for their teeth.
The first 24 to 48 hours are critical
The period immediately after whitening is especially important. Mimir said teeth may become more sensitive to staining during the first 24 to 48 hours.
This is why patients should be careful with iced coffee, colored fruit juices, acidic drinks and foods with intense pigments, especially during summer. These products may contribute to discoloration after the procedure.
Mimir recommended limiting these drinks and foods for the first two weeks after whitening treatment. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following the dentist’s instructions are also essential for preserving the result.
Using a straw for colored drinks, rinsing the mouth with water after consumption and brushing regularly may help reduce staining risk.
Whitening before vacation should be timed carefully
People planning a holiday or major event should not leave whitening until the last moment.
Mimir recommended having the procedure about one to two weeks before vacation. This allows time for temporary sensitivity to decrease and for the new tooth shade to stabilize.
The extra time also makes it possible to schedule additional applications or follow-up visits if needed. This is particularly important for people who may experience sensitivity after whitening.
Since cold drinks are commonly consumed during summer, temporary post-whitening sensitivity can affect comfort. Proper timing helps protect both the aesthetic result and the patient’s daily comfort.
Whiteness depends on long-term care
Teeth whitening is not a permanent procedure. How long the result lasts depends on oral hygiene, dietary habits, smoking, coffee and tea consumption, and regular dental care.
Mimir said brushing, flossing and routine dental check-ups are essential after whitening. Limiting coffee, tea, tobacco and foods with strong pigments may help preserve the whitening effect for a longer time.
Professional dental cleaning appointments should not be skipped. Supportive whitening applications may be needed at certain intervals, but these should also be performed under dentist supervision.
Patients should remember that a healthy smile is not only about color. Gum health, enamel strength, tooth structure and daily oral care are all part of smile aesthetics.
