ISTANBUL, TURKIYE — Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Karacalar announced that there is currently no approved medication to directly cure lipedema, cautioning patients against expecting "miracles" from single-pill treatments.
Lipedema, commonly known as "painful fat syndrome," remains a significant concern for many women. Prof. Dr. Karacalar clarified that while various supplements and medications are frequently used, they serve only to manage symptoms rather than eliminate the underlying condition. Definitive fat removal continues to rely on advanced surgical interventions as the medical gold standard.
No approved drug for direct treatment
Currently, no pharmaceutical has been officially approved to cure lipedema. Prof. Dr. Karacalar explained that medications are used purely for supportive purposes. Regarding insulin resistance drugs like Metformin, he stated that while it does not treat lipedema itself, it may be included in a plan if the patient has accompanying metabolic issues such as PCOS or metabolic syndrome. Any such treatment must be personalized and evaluated by a specialist.
The role of supplements and inflammation
Various supplements are used to manage inflammation and tenderness in lipedema patients. According to Karacalar, Bromelain may reduce sensitivity through its anti-inflammatory effects and potentially decrease tissue stiffness, though strong clinical evidence is still lacking. Other substances like flavonoids, curcumin, and selenium are also utilized for their anti-inflammatory properties. He further noted that bioidentical hormone replacement is not a cure but can support women experiencing hormonal imbalances during menopause.
Surgery as the definitive solution
Prof. Dr. Karacalar emphasized that the most effective method for the permanent removal of lipedemic fat remains surgery. While supportive therapies can alleviate discomfort, he concluded that "liposuction is still the most effective method for permanently removing lipedemic fat".
