ISTANBUL, TURKEY — The Turkish men's national football team has taken a critical 1-0 lead against Romania in their World Cup play-off semi-final, keeping their hopes alive of returning to the global stage after a 24-year absence.
Breaking the silence in the 53rd minute at Istanbul's Tupras Stadium, Ferdi Kadioglu found the net following a well-placed assist from young star Arda Guler, marking a pivotal moment in Turkey's quest for World Cup qualification. The match, officiated by French referee Francois Letexier, is seen as one of the most vital turning points for the national team.
Dominating the first half
The high-stakes match started at 20:00 local time, with the first half ending in a scoreless draw. According to match statistics highlighted by BBC, the Turkish side controlled the tempo during the first 45 minutes, securing nearly 70 percent of ball possession.
Despite establishing a clear 12-3 advantage in touches inside the opponent's penalty box, Turkey was unable to reflect this intense pressure on the scoreboard before halftime. However, starting the second half with renewed attacking vigor, the team found the breakthrough they were looking for at the 53rd minute. Arda Guler's precise assist from the right flank was perfectly controlled by Kadioglu, who sent the ball into the Romanian net to give Turkey the lead.
"No favorites in such matches"
Ahead of the single-leg elimination clash, both head coach Vincenzo Montella and Real Madrid prospect Arda Guler delivered important messages regarding the team's mindset. Guler emphasized that Romania would also give their all, stating that these life-or-death matches have no clear favorites.
"It will not be an easy game. It is a vital match for them as well. There are no favorites in matches like this. Ultimately, it is a single game," Guler noted.
Montella, on the other hand, drew attention to the unity within the squad. Highlighting their primary objective of securing a World Cup ticket, the Italian coach added, "We need to show that unity we always display during difficult moments until the very end."
Facing a familiar opponent
Romania, the first-ever opponent in the Turkish national team's 103-year history, is managed by a highly familiar figure to Turkish football fans: Mircea Lucescu. Having previously coached Galatasaray, Besiktas, and the Turkish national team, Lucescu leads a Romanian squad that also features current Super Lig players such as Ianis Hagi, Valentin Mihaila, and Deian Sorescu.
If Turkey manages to eliminate Romania, they will advance to the play-off final to face the winner of the Slovakia-Kosovo matchup in an away game on Tuesday, March 31. Should the Turkish team successfully pass the final qualification hurdle, they will be placed in Group D of the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States, Australia, and Paraguay. Turkey's last appearance in the tournament was in 2002, where they achieved a historic third-place finish.
