The foundation of the company was laid by Gabriel J.B. Arcas in 1902 as an İzmir-based import firm. A pivotal shift occurred in 1944 when his son, Lucien G. Arcas, redefined the company’s core activities by focusing on international transportation. The third generation of leadership, Lucien Arkas, who continues today as the Chairman of Arkas Holding, took over management in 1964.

The Evolution of the Arkas Maritime Identity

The company initially built its reputation on representing major international shipowners. This activity was formalized in 1979 when the company’s name was changed to "Arkas Denizcilik ve Nakliyat A.Ş." (Arkas Shipping and Transport Co.).

A significant expansion of the business scope occurred in 1996 when Lucien Arkas entered the ship-owning arena. This move led to the establishment of EMES Denizcilik ve Nakliyat Ltd. Şti. (EMES Shipping and Transport Co.), initially focused on providing Feeder Services.

• Liner Services Focus: The subsequent addition of regular liner services—scheduled vessel operations—marked a turning point, elevating it to the primary activity of the Group.

• Arkas Line: In 2009, Arkas Container Transport Inc. (Arkas Line), focused entirely on liner shipping, was established with its headquarters in Istanbul. Meanwhile, feeder services continued under EMES Feedering S.R.L., based in Genoa, Italy.
