Azerbaijan starts natural gas exports to Germany and Austria
Azerbaijan has officially begun exporting natural gas to Germany and Austria via the Southern Gas Corridor, increasing its European buyer count to 16.

The State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has officially announced the commencement of natural gas exports to Germany and Austria, marking a significant expansion of Azerbaijan’s energy footprint in Western Europe.
According to a statement released by SOCAR today, the gas is being delivered via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)—the European leg of the Southern Gas Corridor—reaching buyers in Austria and Germany through Italy. This development brings the total number of countries purchasing Azerbaijani natural gas to 16, further diversifying Europe’s energy sources away from Russian dependence.
Strategic expansion through the Southern Gas Corridor
The delivery to German and Austrian markets follows the strategic route of the Southern Gas Corridor, which transports gas from Azerbaijan through Turkey via the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP). The TAP pipeline begins at the Turkish-Greek border, traverses Albania and the Adriatic Sea, and terminates in Southern Italy, from where it is now being redirected to Central European markets.
The move is seen as a vital step for European energy security, especially following the geopolitical shifts caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In June 2023, the German energy firm Sefe (formerly Gazprom Germania) signed a ten-year contract with SOCAR for the supply of 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, a deal that was facilitated after the German government intervened to save Sefe from insolvency during the 2022 energy crisis.
Record exports and future investment needs
In 2025, Azerbaijan exported a total of 12.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe, reflecting the growing demand for alternative energy suppliers. However, industry experts suggest that further increasing these volumes will require significant infrastructure investment to expand the current capacity of the existing pipeline networks.
The current export milestone reinforces Azerbaijan's role as a key player in the European energy market, as the continent continues to prioritize long-term supply stability and the reduction of regional energy vulnerabilities.
