EU rejects US security strategy: Allies must act like allies
EU Council President Antonio Costa and the German government have firmly rejected the new US National Security Strategy, describing American interference in European politics as "unacceptable."

European Council President Antonio Costa has slammed the new US National Security Strategy as "unacceptable," deepening the crisis of confidence between Brussels and Washington under the Trump administration.
Speaking at a conference in Brussels, Costa responded to the document released by the White House last week, which levied heavy accusations against the European Union. "We cannot accept the threat of interference in European politics," Costa said, emphasizing that the US cannot decide on behalf of European citizens which political parties are good or bad, nor impose its own vision of freedom of speech.
'If We Are Allies, Act Like Allies'
The US document accuses the EU of undermining "political freedom and sovereignty," censoring speech, and suppressing political opposition. It also suggests that the Trump administration will support resistance against the "current trajectory" in European countries, signaling backing for anti-EU far-right parties.
Costa noted that while the US remains an important economic partner and ally, the new strategy goes far beyond typical disagreements on issues like climate change. "If we are allies, we must act like allies," Costa stated, adding that Europe must remain sovereign.
Germany Rejects 'Ideological' Attacks
The German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also issued a stern rejection of the US claims. While trying to prevent a complete rupture in transatlantic relations, Berlin described the accusations against the EU as "ideological" rather than strategic.
Government spokesperson Sebastian Hille stated that Germany firmly rejects the accusations regarding the suppression of freedom, noting that political liberty is a core EU value. Hille also highlighted a major geopolitical divergence: unlike previous US administrations, the new Trump strategy does not classify Russia as a threat.
"We do not share this assessment. We continue to adhere to NATO's common analysis. According to NATO, Russia poses a danger and threat to transatlantic security," Hille said, emphasizing that Russia's militaristic revisionism endangers Euro-Atlantic security.
Moscow Welcomes the Rift
While European leaders voiced concern, the Kremlin welcomed the new US strategy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Trump's strategy "largely overlaps" with Russia's vision. Costa described this alignment between Moscow and Washington as "worrying".
Meanwhile, Germany's far-right AfD party celebrated the US document, with co-chair Alice Weidel stating that the White House's warning about the "collapse of European civilization" validates their political platform.
