Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro detained amid escape attempt fears
Brazil’s former far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro has been detained by federal police amid concerns he planned to seek asylum in a foreign embassy to avoid a 27-year prison sentence.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was detained by federal police on Saturday at his villa in Brasilia following intelligence suggesting he was preparing to seek asylum in a foreign embassy to evade imprisonment.
The arrest order, described as "preventive detention," was issued by the Supreme Court after suspicions arose that the 70-year-old far-right leader might attempt to flee the country. Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, was transported to the federal police headquarters, located just 11 kilometers from the presidential palace he once occupied.
Allegations of a planned escape
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the detention early Saturday morning. According to reports cited by The Guardian, Justice Moraes noted that Bolsonaro's electronic monitoring anklet had been tampered with at 12:08 a.m., a move interpreted as "part of an escape attempt."
Authorities grew concerned over a planned "vigil" organized by Bolsonaro's supporters outside his residence. The gathering was called for by his son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who urged followers on social media: "Will you fight for your country, or will you sit on the couch at home and watch from your phone?"
Justice Moraes warned that the commotion caused by such a vigil could serve as a diversion, facilitating Bolsonaro's flight to a nearby diplomatic mission.
A Looming 27-Year Sentence
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and 3 months in prison for plotting a coup to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office after the 2022 election. However, the sentence had not yet been enforced due to ongoing appeals and legal procedures.
Suspicion regarding Bolsonaro's intent to flee has been compounded by his past behavior. In 2024, he spent two nights inside the Hungarian Embassy, and allegations surfaced last year that he had sought political asylum in Argentina. His proximity to the US Embassy—a 15-minute drive from his home—and his close ties with US President Donald Trump further fueled speculation of an escape plan.
