Galatasaray Falls to Monaco 1-0 as Injury Blow Mars Champions League Clash
Galatasaray suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Monaco in the UEFA Champions League, losing goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to injury in a match decided by a critical set-piece.
WISE NEWS PRESS / MONACO — DEC. 10, 2025
Galatasaray returned empty-handed from their away fixture against Monaco, suffering a 1-0 defeat in the sixth week of the UEFA Champions League league phase.
The match at Stade Louis II saw the Turkish giants concede their second consecutive loss in the tournament, complicating their standing in the newly formatted league stage. The defeat follows a surprising 1-0 home loss to Belgian side Union SG on November 26.
Goalkeeper Drama and Decisive Goal
The turning point of the match centered around Galatasaray's goalkeeper, Uğurcan Çakır. Çakır managed to save a penalty kick awarded to the French side, keeping his team in the game. However, he sustained an injury in a subsequent position and was forced to leave the pitch, replaced by second-choice goalkeeper Günay Güvenç.
Disaster struck immediately after the substitution. Monaco scored the winning goal from a corner kick taken right after Güvenç entered the game. Earlier in the first half, Galatasaray midfielder İlkay Gündoğan failed to convert a promising scoring opportunity.
Upcoming Fixtures and Standings
With this result, Monaco increased their points total to nine. Galatasaray, having won three of their first five matches against Liverpool, Bodo Glimt, and Ajax, has now recorded three wins and three losses in total.
The Yellow-Reds face a challenging schedule to close out the league phase:
-
January 21: Galatasaray vs. Atletico Madrid (Home) - 20:45
-
January 28: Manchester City vs. Galatasaray (Away) - 23:00
New Tournament Format
Under the new UEFA format introduced this season, the number of teams has increased from 32 to 36. Teams now play eight matches against eight different opponents—half at home and half away—rather than the traditional group stage.
The top eight teams will qualify directly for the Round of 16, while those finishing between 9th and 24th will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their spots. Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated from European competition entirely.
