Power struggles in Ankara: Hakan Fidan raises the stakes
Journalist Ahmet Takan analyzes Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s latest TV appearance as a strategic move in the internal race for political succession in Turkey.
WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY
Journalist Ahmet Takan has interpreted Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s recent extensive broadcast on TRT Haber as a "personal propaganda" effort and a strategic move to "raise the stakes" in the ongoing internal race for political succession. Takan argues that despite the regional turmoil, the program focused more on personal branding than on concrete solutions to global crises.
According to Takan’s analysis, Fidan’s rhetoric and chosen expressions are directly linked to future projections and leadership debates within the ruling AK Party. The messaging regarding Syria, relations with the US, and Latin American policies is seen as an attempt to project a profile that is both loyal to President Erdoğan and a "ready-to-cooperate" partner for the West.
Praising Erdoğan and Aligning with Trump
In the program, Hakan Fidan described President Erdoğan’s leadership as "master captainship" and defined 2025 as a year of "extraordinary performance" in foreign policy. Takan criticized these remarks, suggesting that Fidan’s comments on US President Trump—stating "Our perspective overlaps with his"—were a calculated effort to gain external favor and present a compatible image for the new administration in Washington.
Insights on Venezuela and Maduro
Minister Fidan’s comments on Venezuelan leader Maduro, specifically regarding the possibility of a US operation to remove him, caught significant attention. Fidan noted that Turkey had "followed this development step by step." Takan describes Fidan’s diplomatic stance on this issue as a "balancing act" carefully constructed to safeguard his own political future.
The "100-Year Deep Sleep" Polemic
Fidan’s assessment that "The Islamic world has awakened from its 100-year deep sleep" sparked a sharp reaction from CHP Vice President Namık Tan. Tan accused Fidan of disregarding the achievements of the Republic. Takan, however, argues that Fidan chose this specific jargon deliberately to avoid being labeled as a "monşer" (elitist diplomat) by his rivals within the AK Party, aiming instead to solidify his standing with the conservative base.
