Asst. Prof. Dr. Semra Baripoğlu, a Psychiatrist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital, emphasized that psychiatric medications should only be used under specialist control, stating that correct use is highly effective in the treatment of mental illnesses.
Dr. Baripoğlu stated that psychiatric medications can be highly effective in treating many mental illnesses when used with correct diagnosis and appropriate follow-up processes. However, she also noted that like any medication, these drugs can have side effects and unexpected effects due to individual differences.
Specialist Prescription and Follow-up Essential
Emphasizing the importance of psychiatric medications being evaluated and prescribed by a psychiatrist, Dr. Baripoğlu said, "The first step for a person who thinks they need to use psychiatric medication should be to consult a psychiatrist and undergo a comprehensive evaluation. If deemed necessary after the examination, your doctor will determine the appropriate medication for the diagnosis and start treatment."
Regular Use and Follow-up Examinations
Stressing the importance of patience during the treatment process, using the medication regularly for the recommended period, and attending follow-up examinations, Dr. Baripoğlu said, "In these evaluations, medication efficacy, side effects, and a new roadmap to be followed in treatment are determined." She stated that doctors should be informed when a side effect causing tolerance difficulties is encountered, and if necessary, dose adjustment or medication change can be planned.
Addiction Anxiety Unfounded
Addressing the widespread anxiety in society that psychiatric medications cause addiction, Dr. Baripoğlu pointed out that addictive drugs are limited to certain groups and that therapeutic drugs do not cause addiction when used properly. Dr. Baripoğlu concluded her words by saying, "All necessary warnings and usage rules regarding drugs with addiction potential are clearly stated by the physician."
Personalized Treatment and Additional Methods
Dr. Baripoğlu stated that it is now known that individuals' genetic makeup can affect their response to medication, and that a more personalized treatment plan can be created by using drug blood level measurements and pharmacogenetic tests when necessary. She also stated that additional treatment methods such as psychotherapy, family and patient psychoeducation, and ergotherapy can be included in the process depending on the type of illness and the person's needs.
