Russian missile and drone strike injures woman and child in Odesa region

ODESA, Ukraine — A Russian missile and drone strike on Ukraine’s Odesa region injured a woman and a 4-year-old child overnight on July 24, damaging homes, vehicles and part of a business site, regional officials said.

The attack affected residential and industrial areas, including the roof of an apartment building, several privately owned houses and passenger vehicles, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration. Emergency crews extinguished fires that broke out following the strikes.

Woman and 4-year-old child injured

A woman and a 4-year-old child were injured during the overnight attack, according to the regional administration.

Medical teams provided the two casualties with the assistance they required. Officials did not immediately release additional information about the nature of their injuries, whether they were taken to hospital or their current medical condition.

No fatalities were reported in the initial assessment.

The identities of the injured woman and child were not disclosed. Authorities also did not specify whether they were inside one of the damaged residential buildings when the strike occurred.

Regional officials described the attack as a large-scale combined assault involving both missiles and strike drones. The number and specific types of weapons used were not immediately announced.

Apartment building and private homes damaged

The roof of a multistorey residential building was damaged as a result of the strikes, Kiper said.

Several private houses were also damaged, although the regional administration did not provide an exact number or specify whether any of the buildings had become uninhabitable. Passenger cars in the affected area sustained damage as well.

Photographs released following the attack showed damage in residential surroundings, but officials said assessments were continuing.

The full scale of the property damage may become clearer after emergency workers and local authorities complete inspections of the affected buildings. Such inspections are generally required to determine whether residents can safely remain in their homes and what repairs may be necessary.

Residents were advised to follow official safety instructions as emergency personnel worked at the strike sites.

Business site also affected

The attack also damaged the grounds of a business in the region, according to Kiper.

Preliminary information indicated that the company’s production facilities were not destroyed and that no workers or other people were injured at the site.

Officials did not identify the business, describe the nature of its operations or disclose the exact location of the affected facility.

The regional administration also did not say whether operations at the site had been suspended as a result of the attack. Further details could be released after structural and security assessments are completed.

The reported damage to both residential and commercial locations illustrates the wider impact of combined missile and drone attacks, which can affect several sites across a region during the same overnight assault.

Emergency crews extinguish fires

Fires broke out following the missile and drone strikes, prompting a response from units of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

Firefighters brought all reported fires under control, according to the regional administration. No emergency workers were reported injured during the response.

The initial statement did not specify how many separate fires occurred or which structures had caught fire.

Emergency personnel also worked to secure the affected areas, inspect damaged buildings and address immediate risks caused by debris and structural damage.

Local authorities may provide residents with temporary assistance if homes are found to be unsafe. No evacuation figures or information about temporary accommodation had been announced in the first official reports.

Officials assess extent of destruction

Damage assessments remained under way after the overnight attack.

Officials had not immediately published a complete count of the homes, apartments or vehicles affected. It was also unclear whether utility services, including electricity, water or gas supplies, had been disrupted in any of the damaged areas.

The Odesa Regional Military Administration said residential and industrial infrastructure had been struck, but did not announce the precise locations, citing the initial nature of the assessment.

Authorities frequently limit the immediate publication of detailed location information following attacks because of security concerns and the risk of follow-up strikes.

Residents were urged to respond to air raid warnings and remain in protected areas until alerts were officially lifted.

Odesa faces repeated attacks in July

The July 24 strike came amid an intensified period of attacks on the southern Ukrainian region.

Kiper said on July 20 that Russian strikes had killed 28 people in the Odesa region since the beginning of the month. He said the region had faced attacks on a daily basis and that there had been days when between 13 and 15 air raid alerts were issued.

The latest assault added to pressure on residential communities and emergency services dealing with repeated missile and drone attacks.

Odesa and the surrounding region contain major residential centres, commercial facilities and Black Sea infrastructure. Attacks in the area have repeatedly damaged homes, businesses, transport facilities and other civilian sites during the war.

Ukrainian authorities have continued to call for stronger air defence capabilities to protect cities and critical infrastructure from missiles and long-range attack drones.

Russia did not immediately issue a public statement addressing the regional administration’s account of the July 24 attack.

The casualty and damage figures remained preliminary and could be revised as emergency teams completed their work and local authorities gathered further information from the affected areas.
