RIVNE, Ukraine — The family of fallen Ukrainian Sgt. Volodymyr Mykolaiovych Pylypey is calling for public support for an official petition seeking to award him the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

The petition, published on the official website of the President of Ukraine, asks that Pylypey be recognized for personal courage, loyalty to his military oath and service in defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The initiative was submitted by his wife, Maryna Anatoliivna Pylypey, while a woman named Lesya, who identified herself as his sister, also appealed to the media to help share his story and the petition.

An official petition for posthumous recognition

The official electronic petition, registered as No. 22/270414-еп, calls on Ukraine’s president to award Sgt. Volodymyr Pylypey the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

In the petition text, Maryna Pylypey describes her husband as a Ukrainian defender who gave his life for the country’s freedom, independence and future. The request states that Pylypey remained faithful to his military oath until the end and fulfilled his duty as a defender of Ukraine.

The petition remains open for signatures. Under Ukraine’s e-petition system, a petition must gather 25,000 signatures to be formally considered.

A young man from Rivne region

Volodymyr Mykolaiovych Pylypey was born on April 5, 2000, in the village of Pustomyty in the Hoshcha community of Rivne region. He was the son of Svitlana and Mykola Pylypey.

According to the petition, he studied at Maliatyn School before entering Rivne Professional Lyceum, where he trained as an electric-gas welder. In civilian life, he worked for a time at the Rivneazot enterprise and later at a private company in Rivne in the fields of advertising and design.

His family remembers him as hardworking, responsible, sincere and kind. The petition says he easily found common ground with people, was always ready to help and treated every task with care and discipline.

Service in the 95th Air Assault Brigade

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Pylypey joined the defense of his country. The petition says he told his relatives: “I need to go defend Ukraine.”

He began serving on May 18, 2022, and was assigned to the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade. He served as a senior gunner in the 1st artillery platoon of the artillery battery of the 2nd air assault battalion.

His military rank was sergeant. The petition says Pylypey carried out combat missions with honor, earned the respect of commanders and fellow soldiers, and received state and military awards for courage, dedication to the oath and exemplary service.

Killed near Novoselivka

Sgt. Pylypey was killed on June 5, 2026, near the settlement of Novoselivka in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region as a result of Russian artillery fire. He was 26 years old.

The petition says he had married his beloved Maryna just one month before his death. The couple were expecting a child and had dreamed of building a home, a family and a shared future.

Those hopes, his family wrote, were cut short by the war.

A family’s appeal to preserve his memory

For his wife, Volodymyr Pylypey remains a beloved husband. For his relatives, he remains a son and brother. For his fellow soldiers, he is remembered as a reliable warrior. For Ukraine, his family says, he is a defender who gave the most precious thing he had: his life.

The petition asks that Ukraine preserve his memory through official recognition and award him the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

Supporters can sign the petition through the official presidential e-petition website after authorization.
