Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), a revered figure in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, holds a significant place in religious history, yet the exact location of his final resting place remains a topic of historical and theological discussion.

While his life is detailed extensively in the "Surah Yusuf" of the Quran, emphasizing values such as patience, loyalty, and forgiveness, his death and burial site have led to various traditions and claims over the centuries.

The Most Widely Accepted Location: Nablus

The most prominent tradition holds that Prophet Yusuf is buried in the city of Nablus in the West Bank. According to historical accounts, his body was initially in Egypt but was later transported to the land of Canaan.

This site, known as Joseph's Tomb (Qabr Yūsuf), is located at the eastern entrance of the valley separating Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, approximately 300 meters northwest of Jacob's Well. The location is near Tell Balata, identified as the biblical city of Shechem.

Historical Accounts of His Transfer

Islamic and biblical traditions offer insight into how his remains might have moved.

• Burial in Egypt: Historical texts, including those by Al-Tabari, suggest that Prophet Yusuf passed away in Egypt, where his body was placed in a marble sarcophagus and buried near the Nile.

• Exodus with Moses: It is narrated that when Prophet Moses (Musa) led the Israelites out of Egypt, he carried Prophet Yusuf's remains with him, fulfilling a promise made to Yusuf.

• Final Resting Place: Following the death of Joshua (Yeşû), the remains were reportedly interred near Shechem (modern-day Nablus), in a plot of land associated with his father, Prophet Jacob (Yakub).

Alternative Claims

While Nablus is the most cited location, other narratives exist regarding his tomb:

• Hebron (Al-Khalil): Some sources suggest his tomb could be in the city of Hebron (Al-Khalil), alongside other patriarchs like Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Yakub.

• Damascus and Cairo: Less common traditions claim he might have been buried in the courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus or at the site of the Yusuf Mosque in Cairo, though these are not widely supported by historians.
