WISE NEWS PRESS / AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — NOV. 24, 2025

Hamit Karakus, born in Kırşehir and having held critical positions such as Rotterdam Deputy Mayor and senator in the Netherlands, continues his career as the General Manager of the North Holland police force.

Karakus' appointment to this position indicates a remarkable career journey showing that Turkish-origin individuals in the Netherlands are rising not only in politics but also in the most strategic points of public administration.

From Kırşehir to Rotterdam Management

Born on February 22, 1965, in Kırşehir, Hamit Karakus worked on zoning and housing policies in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam for many years. Drawing attention with his experience in local government, Karakus served as Deputy Mayor of Rotterdam (Alderman) between 2006–2014.

Senate Period and Conciliatory Style

Following his success in local politics, Karakus stepped into national politics and entered the Dutch Senate (Eerste Kamer) from the Labor Party (PvdA) in 2021.

During his tenure in the Senate, he prepared reports, especially on his area of expertise: the housing crisis, rent control, and city planning. He became known for his calm style and conciliatory stance throughout his political career.

At the Pinnacle of the Police Force

Completing his term in the Senate in 2023, Hamit Karakus opened a new page in his career and moved to bureaucracy. Karakus has been serving as the General Manager of the North Holland police force since September 1, 2023.
