Vatican Rules Dozulé 'Jesus Appeared' Claims Are Not Supernatural

WISE NEWS PRESS / VATICAN CITY — Nov. 12, 2025

The Vatican has declared that claims of Jesus Christ appearing in the northern French town of Dozulé are not authentic. In a statement released Wednesday, a new directive approved by Pope Leo specifies that these claims should not be considered "supernatural" or accepted by Catholics.

A Catholic woman residing in Dozulé claimed to have seen Jesus 49 times in the 1970s and alleged that he instructed her to erect a 7.38-meter cross on the town's hilltop. However, the Vatican text stated: "It has been definitively assessed that the alleged apparitions in question are not of supernatural origin."

The claims in Dozulé caused a considerable stir in France during those years, and the town quickly became a destination for Catholic pilgrims. However, French diocesan authorities were cautious about the events even at that time.

The Problem of Unfulfilled Prophecy

The statement also recalled that during the alleged apparitions in Dozulé, Jesus was said to have predicted that "the world would end before the year 2000." The Vatican noted that it is "obvious that this supposed prophecy was not fulfilled."

The statement further clarified the spiritual meaning of the cross, saying, "Recognition of the Cross does not require a 7.38-meter structure of steel or concrete; the Cross rises anew when a heart is opened to devotion."

Increased Scrutiny on Apparition Claims

In accordance with Catholic belief, it is held that sacred figures like Jesus or the Virgin Mary may appear in a supernatural manner to call for peace or propose new forms of worship. However, the Vatican warns against using such claims for material gain and evaluates every claim through a rigorous official process.

The Vatican has recently adopted a more transparent and cautious stance against similar "apparition" cases. A new guideline published in May granted local bishops the authority to rapidly assess such claims and prevent the spread of misinformation. Approved "apparition events" recognized by the Vatican include the Virgin Mary's appearance as the Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico in 1531 and the visions of Jesus to Polish nun Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s.
