Zelenskyy: Russia is preparing to target nuclear power plants
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy warned that Moscow is planning strikes on nuclear plants and energy infrastructure to force a surrender during the harsh winter.
WISE NEWS PRESS / KYIV, UKRAINE
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Sunday that Russia is preparing to target the nation's nuclear power plants in an attempt to force a surrender during the peak of winter.
According to Zelenskyy, Moscow has significantly intensified its strikes in recent weeks, increasingly focusing on energy facilities to maximize the suffering of civilians. He emphasized that the systematic destruction of the energy grid is a deliberate move by the Kremlin to exert pressure on Kyiv. While energy services are working around the clock to restore power, thousands of households remain without gas or electricity across multiple regions.
Escalating Aerial Assaults and Civilian Toll
Zelenskyy reported a massive surge in the volume and destructive power of Russian weaponry used in night-time raids. He noted that over 200 attack drones were launched on Saturday night alone, targeting regions including Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, and Odesa. "Over the past week, we have faced more than 1,300 drone strikes, over 1,000 guided aerial bombs, and more than 20 missile attacks, including ballistics," Zelenskyy stated, highlighting the urgent need for more interceptor missiles for Ukraine's air defense systems.
Diplomatic Missions in Washington
The escalation coincides with a high-level Ukrainian delegation's arrival in Washington on Saturday. Led by Chief of Staff Kyrylo Budanov, and including Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Davyd Arakhamia, the team is set to discuss the "details of a potential peace agreement" with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump. On Sunday, the delegation is scheduled to meet with special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll. Zelenskyy instructed the team to provide detailed briefings on Russia’s relentless strikes to ensure the American side understands the deteriorating window for dialogue.
A Call for Global Resolve
Zelenskyy stressed that if Russia is intentionally prolonging the diplomatic process through military aggression, the world’s response must be decisive. "Ukraine needs more protection now. If Russia consciously delays diplomacy, the world must increase support for Ukraine and pressure on the aggressor," he wrote on the X platform. He concluded that the relentless attacks are actively worsening the few remaining opportunities for a negotiated settlement, necessitating a firmer stance from international allies.
