AI revolution in dentistry: Diagnosis reduces to seconds

WISE NEWS PRESS / ISTANBUL, TURKEY — DEC. 12, 2025

Prof. Dr. Emir Yüzbaşıoğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at Istinye University, has highlighted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping dental practices. By reducing diagnostic times to seconds and minimizing human error, AI is becoming the dentist's "super assistant."

As digital transformation accelerates in healthcare, dentistry is shifting from experience-based practice to data-driven precision. From analyzing X-rays to designing prosthetic teeth, AI algorithms are now integral to the clinical workflow.

Speed and precision in diagnosis

The most immediate impact of AI is seen in radiological imaging. Prof. Dr. Yüzbaşıoğlu pointed out that human factors such as fatigue and distraction can lead to diagnostic errors, which AI helps to eliminate.

"AI analyzes dental X-rays in seconds and presents findings to the physician immediately," Yüzbaşıoğlu explained. "It can detect early-stage lesions, caries, and bone loss that may be difficult for the human eye to discern. This significantly shortens examination time while increasing diagnostic accuracy."

Perfect fit and aesthetic design

The technology extends beyond diagnosis into treatment planning and design. Using Computer-Aided Design (CAD/CAM) systems integrated with AI, the precision of crowns, bridges, and fillings has reached new heights.

In orthodontics, AI software analyzes jaw and tooth structures to calculate the ideal movement path and duration for treatment. For aesthetic procedures, algorithms analyze facial features to recommend the most compatible tooth shapes for the patient's smile, directly boosting patient satisfaction.

The dentist's role is evolving

Prof. Dr. Yüzbaşıoğlu predicts that within the next 5 to 10 years, dentistry will be irreversibly transformed. He emphasizes that the role of the dentist is evolving from a manual operator to a manager of data and personalized care.

"The physician will transform into a manager who evaluates the analyses provided by AI, creates personalized treatment plans, and makes ethical decisions. The physician is not the assistant of AI; AI will be the physician's super assistant."

Education and local investment

Stating that future dentists must be prepared for this digital era, Yüzbaşıoğlu emphasized that "Digital Dentistry" and "AI Applications" should be compulsory parts of the curriculum, not optional electives.

He also called for greater investment in domestic technology: "We have local AI solutions in our country, but we need more investment to develop new applications and integrate them into clinics. Universities must conduct joint R&D projects with the sector to make these technologies accessible."
