Phytotherapy Specialist Dr. Ümit Aktaş has emphasized that the most natural way to strengthen the immune system during the winter months is to add healing spices to the table. Stating that spices like rosemary, thyme, sumac, mint, and black pepper provide more than just flavor, Dr. Aktaş described them as powerful natural supports protecting the body against diseases.
Highlighting the importance of clean food and proper nutrition, Dr. Aktaş noted that increasing spice consumption in winter is crucial for supporting the body's immunity, digestion, and warming mechanisms.
Natural warming mechanism: The thermogenic effect
Dr. Aktaş pointed out that certain spices have a "thermogenic" (heat-producing) effect, which helps keep the metabolism active and the body warm during cold weather.
"Chili pepper (pul biber) and black pepper naturally warm the body thanks to their thermogenic effects," Dr. Aktaş explained. "Additionally, spices like ginger, cinnamon, clove, and turmeric accelerate metabolism and warm the body from the inside out. Consuming these spices more frequently in cold weather helps reduce the feeling of being cold."
Antiviral shield against infections
With the rise of flu and colds in winter, spices serve as a critical line of defense. Dr. Aktaş drew attention to varieties rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.
"Most spices support your immunity during this period," said Dr. Aktaş. "Especially thyme, cumin, sweet red paprika (high in Vitamin C), and sumac possess strong antiviral, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Thyme increases resistance to colds with its germ-killing effect, while sumac protects cells by sweeping away free radicals."
Support for digestion and mood
Winter diets often include heavier meals, which can strain the digestive system. Experts noted that cumin, black pepper, mint, and thyme help reduce gas, bloating, and indigestion while supporting healthy gut flora.
Furthermore, spices can offer support against seasonal mood shifts caused by reduced sunlight. Dr. Aktaş stated that spices can increase the release of serotonin, the happiness hormone. He specifically recommended rosemary as a supportive remedy for seasonal fatigue and maintaining mental balance.
