Balloon Sinuplasty: A Safe, Incision-Free Solution for Sinusitis

WISE NEWS PRESS / ISTANBUL, TURKEY — DEC 16, 2025

Prof. Dr. Yavuz Selim Pata, an ENT and Head and Neck Surgery Specialist at Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital, has highlighted the advantages of "Balloon Sinuplasty" in treating chronic sinusitis. He emphasized that because the procedure involves no cutting of tissue, it is a safe and effective option even for patients with bleeding disorders.

Sinusitis significantly impacts quality of life, causing workforce loss and requiring constant medication. However, modern techniques like balloon sinuplasty have minimized surgical risks. "Since it is incision-free, it minimizes bleeding risks and constitutes a safe option for high-risk groups," Prof. Dr. Pata stated.

Rising Cases and Serious Risks

Prof. Dr. Pata noted that sinusitis cases are increasing due to crowded living conditions and artificial environments that trigger allergies. He warned that if left untreated, the infection can spread, leading to severe complications such as otitis media (middle ear infection), vision loss, or even life-threatening conditions like meningitis and brain abscesses.

"Constant fullness in the face, headache, fatigue, and sleep disorders seriously reduce life satisfaction," he added.

"No Cutting, No Bleeding"

Describing the procedure, Prof. Dr. Pata explained that balloon sinuplasty is performed without any cutting instruments like scalpels or scissors.

"We work without damaging any tissue or harming surrounding structures. This minimizes the risk of bleeding and allows the surgical process to proceed in a much more controlled manner," he said. The technique, developed in the US in 2005 and used in Turkey since 2006, offers success rates comparable to classical surgery but with greater safety.

A Vital Option for Patients with Bleeding Disorders

One of the most significant advantages of the method is its suitability for patients with coagulation issues.

"In classical surgeries, it is difficult to operate on patients with bleeding diseases or those whose bleeding is hard to stop," Prof. Dr. Pata explained. "Since we do not cut anywhere in balloon sinuplasty, it is a bloodless method. Therefore, it provides a very important gain for patients with bleeding risks."

Fast Recovery: Back to Life in Hours

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. A balloon is inserted into the blocked sinus ostium and inflated to widen the channel, restoring aeration.

Prof. Dr. Pata highlighted the rapid recovery time: "Since there is no cutting or trauma, patients are discharged on the same day. Most people can return to their daily activities within 3 to 5 hours."

He concluded by noting that while the method is highly effective for most patients, those with nasal polyps may require a combination of balloon sinuplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery for the best results.
