Denmark Rejects Trump’s Greenland Ambitions: Stop the Threats

WISE NEWS PRESS / COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — JANUARY 05, 2026

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a sharp rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing Greenland, emphasizing that the territory is not for sale and calling on Washington to "stop the threats".

Speaking to the national broadcaster TV2, Frederiksen stated that discussing a US takeover of Greenland makes "absolutely no sense". She asserted that the United States lacks the right or authority to annex either of the two autonomous regions that constitute the Danish Realm. The Prime Minister further underlined that Greenland is NATO territory, protected under the alliance's collective security guarantees.

Reaction to the "Soon" Social Media Post

The diplomatic tension escalated after Katie Miller, wife of Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller, posted a photograph of Greenland on social media captioned "Soon" alongside an American flag. Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen condemned the post as "disrespectful," stating that international relations must be rooted in mutual respect and international law rather than "separatist statements" that ignore sovereign rights. Nielsen reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, as Greenland remains a democratic society with strong institutions.

Trump’s Strategic Vision for the Arctic

Since taking office, President Trump has repeatedly suggested that US control over Greenland is an "absolute necessity" for defending the "free world". He argued that acquiring the island is vital for US strategic interests. These claims have been met with consistent rejection from Greenlandic leaders. Former Premier Mute Bourup Egede previously declared that Greenland belongs to its people and is "not for sale and will never be for sale," emphasizing that the nation will not surrender its long-standing struggle for freedom. Greenland is located approximately 2,900 kilometers from Denmark and remains one of its two autonomous regions.
