Destinus has introduced the Ruta Block 2, a long-range autonomous cruise missile designed to strike high-value stationary targets with enhanced precision and a 450-kilometer operational range.
The new variant represents a significant technological leap from its predecessor, transitioning from a "drone-rocket" hybrid to a dedicated autonomous cruise missile. According to reports from Defense Express, the Ruta Block 2 is specifically engineered to bypass modern air defense systems using a combination of stealth design and Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven guidance.
Advanced technical specifications
The Ruta Block 2 boasts a powerful 250 kg warhead, a substantial increase from the previous version which carried between several dozen and 100 kg. Experts highlight that the missile’s multi-mode guidance system utilizes AI to identify and engage targets autonomously. With a range exceeding 450 km, the system allows for strikes deep behind enemy lines, placing high-value infrastructure within reach.
Design improvements and stealth features
Architectural changes in the Ruta Block 2 contribute to its operational efficiency and survivability. The missile features a redesigned fuselage shape, which specialists suggest is intended to reduce its radar cross-section (RCS) and improve stealth. Additionally, the inclusion of a folding wing assembly enables the missile to be launched from compact transport-launch containers, increasing deployment flexibility.
Analysts noted that the configuration of the nose section likely houses a thermal imaging homing seeker. This technology ensures high accuracy during the terminal phase of flight, allowing the missile to adjust its trajectory for a direct hit even in contested electronic warfare environments.
Strategic development background
Destinus, the firm behind the Ruta series, is a private European aerospace company founded in 2021. The company is led by entrepreneur Mikhail Kokorich, who notably renounced his Russian citizenship following the invasion of Ukraine. The development of the Ruta Block 2 aligns with a broader trend of rapid innovation in autonomous long-range strike capabilities.
This announcement follows reports that the United Kingdom is also preparing "Nightfall" missiles for delivery to Ukraine, further indicating an increase in the availability of long-range precision weaponry in the region.
