Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump held a comprehensive phone call to discuss defense industry cooperation, bilateral trade targets, and the escalating crises in Gaza and Venezuela.

According to a statement released by the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, the two leaders focused on strengthening political relations and deepening strategic partnerships. The discussion centered on concrete steps to reach the targeted trade volume between the two nations and enhancing cooperation in the defense sector. President Erdogan also directly conveyed Türkiye's sensitivities regarding the recent US operation in Venezuela, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining regional stability.

Concerns over Venezuela and international law

Following a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, President Erdogan highlighted the necessity of a rules-based international order. "In a world where the law of power prevails over the power of law, instability and conflict are inevitable," Erdogan remarked, noting that Türkiye does not wish to see chaos or tension in any geography. He underscored that he cautioned President Trump against allowing Venezuela to be dragged into further instability, reiterating that Türkiye stands with the friendly people of Venezuela in their struggle for peace and prosperity.

Regional crises: Gaza and Ukraine on the agenda

The leaders also addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the broader implications of regional conflicts. Erdogan noted that the call provided an opportunity to discuss the situation in Palestine as well as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The President reaffirmed Türkiye’s position as a leading advocate for justice and legitimacy on the global stage, stating that diplomatic efforts must prioritize the protection of sovereign rights and the prevention of further humanitarian suffering.

Strategic defense and economic cooperation

The Directorate of Communications reported that both leaders agreed on utilizing existing mechanisms to overcome hurdles in defense industry projects. Strengthening economic ties to achieve bilateral trade goals remained a primary focus of the dialogue. This conversation marks one of the most extensive diplomatic engagements between the two leaders since the beginning of the year, signaling a push for renewed coordination on global security and economic issues.

President Erdogan emphasized the importance of maintaining international legitimacy during his call with President Trump.
