EU urges international law compliance after Venezuela raid

WISE NEWS PRESS / BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas has called for strict adherence to international law and respect for the Venezuelan people's right to self-determination following the recent US military operation.

The statement, supported by all EU member states except Hungary, reiterated the Union's long-standing position that Nicolas Maduro lacks the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader. Kallas emphasized that the EU remains in close contact with the United States and regional partners to facilitate a "Venezuelan-led, negotiated, inclusive, and peaceful solution" while stressing that the fight against organized crime must respect territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Spain and Latin American nations condemn US intervention

In a significant diplomatic shift, EU member Spain issued a joint statement on Sunday with the governments of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay, officially rejecting the US military action. The coalition expressed "deep concern" over the unilateral operation, labeling it a violation of the principles of international law and a failure to respect Venezuela's sovereignty. The joint declaration called for internal dialogue and a resolution consistent with the will of the Venezuelan people, free from "external interference."

Prime Minister Sanchez warns of regional instability

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to social media to criticize the intervention, stating that while Spain did not recognize the Maduro regime, it would not condone actions that violate international law. Sanchez warned that such intervention risks plunging the region into a state of "uncertainty and conflict." Meanwhile, High Representative Kallas used the opportunity to demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners and emphasized the safety of EU citizens currently detained in Venezuela.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed strong opposition to the US military intervention in Venezuela, citing violations of international law.
