WISE NEWS PRESS / BERLIN, GERMANY

Extreme freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have paralyzed daily life across multiple European countries, with temperatures in the Czech Republic plunging as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

The severe weather conditions have caused widespread disruption to transportation networks, particularly affecting air and rail travel. Significant delays and cancellations have been reported in the Netherlands, Poland, and France as aviation authorities manage reduced capacities. Meteorological officials warn that the cold front will continue to impact the Balkans and Central Europe through the coming days.

Widespread travel disruptions and airport closures

Freezing conditions centered in the Czech Republic saw temperatures in the Bohemian Forest near the German border drop to minus 30.6 degrees Celsius. In the Netherlands, approximately 450 flights were canceled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, while train services were halted in the capital and the Utrecht region. Similar disruptions occurred in Poland and Sweden, with Stockholm Airport reporting flight cancellations. In France, civil aviation authorities requested that airlines cancel 15% of flights at Paris’s Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports through Monday evening due to heavy snow.

School closures and isolated villages

In Scotland, hundreds of schools remained closed on Monday as weather warnings were issued across much of Britain due to intense snowfall. The Balkans faced severe conditions, particularly in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania, where heavy snow blocked roads in the Carpathian region of Transylvania, cutting off access to several villages. While snow continued to impact German cities such as Hamburg, Austrian meteorologists warned that temperatures in western regions could drop to minus 17 degrees Celsius by Tuesday.

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures across Germany over the weekend caused significant disruptions to daily life.
