BALIKESIR, TURKEY — An F-16 fighter jet belonging to the 9th Main Jet Base Command fleet crashed in Balikesir, resulting in the martyrdom of the aircraft's pilot, Air Force Pilot Maj. Ibrahim Bolat.
The tragic incident occurred shortly after the jet took off for a night mission. As the nation mourns the loss of the hero pilot, a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash. The martyr was laid to rest with a somber military ceremony in his hometown of Izmir.
Loss of contact and the search operation
According to the official statement released by the Ministry of National Defense (MSB), the F-16 took off from the 9th Main Jet Base Command in Balikesir. However, at exactly 00:56, both radio communication and radar tracking information were abruptly lost. The sudden disappearance triggered immediate action, and a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched in the region.

Rescue teams, including security forces, firefighters, and medical personnel, were dispatched to the suspected crash area based on the last known coordinates. After meticulous efforts, the wreckage of the aircraft was located in a rural area along the side of the Istanbul-Izmir Highway, specifically in the Naipli locality of the Karesi district. Tragically, it was confirmed that the hero pilot commanding the aircraft had been martyred. The wreckage was scattered over a wide area, and teams continued their work at the scene throughout the night.

The Ministry of National Defense expressed its deep sorrow, stating, "We wish God's mercy upon our martyred pilot and extend our condolences to his grieving family and our noble nation."
Official statements and judicial investigation
Following the crash, Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoglu arrived at the scene in the Naipli locality of the Izmir-Istanbul Highway to conduct inspections. Speaking to members of the press, Governor Ustaoglu confirmed the details of the tragic event.
"Our nation's condolences. We are at the scene; according to the information we received, our F-16 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from our 9th Main Jet Command," Ustaoglu said. "Unfortunately, we have 1 martyr, we have reached his body. The crash site is on the side of the road in the Karesi location of the Istanbul-Izmir Highway connected to Balikesir."
Due to the proximity of the crash site to the major roadway, the Izmir-Istanbul Highway was temporarily closed to traffic in the Naipli area to ensure the safety of the ongoing operations and the public.

The exact cause of the F-16 crash remains unknown and will be determined following thorough technical examinations by the accident investigation team. Concurrently, a judicial investigation has been initiated. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced on social media that the Balikesir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an inquiry. He confirmed that the Chief Public Prosecutor, the Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor, and two Public Prosecutors had been dispatched to the crash site to oversee the legal aspects of the investigation.
