Femtosecond laser in cataract treatment reduces error risk

IZMIR, TÜRKIYE — Assoc. Prof. Bilgehan Sezgin Asena, Chief Physician of Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital, explained that femtosecond laser technology used in the treatment of age-related cataracts yields successful results and significantly reduces the risk of error.

Pointing out that cataracts are a part of the body's natural aging process, Asena likened this condition to graying hair: "Everyone's hair turns gray over time. Although aging-related effects vary from person to person, they are seen in everyone eventually. Cataracts can sometimes appear at the age of 40-45, and sometimes at the age of 80."

"Healthy living can delay cataracts"

Although the development of cataracts cannot be completely prevented, the process can be slowed down. Answering the frequently asked question by patients, "Can we prevent cataracts with nutrition?", Assoc. Prof. Asena said:

"Taking good care of ourselves and eating a healthy diet slows down all aging-related processes in our body and also has a positive effect on cataracts. However, depending on a long life span, it is possible for almost everyone to develop cataracts."

Flawless surgery with femtosecond laser

Emphasizing that the success of cataract surgeries has increased with developing technology, Asena listed the advantages of the femtosecond laser method as follows:

"With the help of special imaging techniques, the risk of error in surgeries is reduced to a minimum. With the femtosecond laser, we not only treat cataracts; we also perform intraocular lens operations on patients with refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Thus, our patients can get rid of both cataracts and their distance and near glasses."
