German Chancellor Merz Warns: Pax Americana Is Over

WISE NEWS PRESS / MUNICH, GERMANY — DEC. 14, 2025

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stark warning that the United States may permanently distance itself from its European allies, stating that the era of "Pax Americana" has largely come to an end.

Speaking at the Christian Social Union (CSU) congress in Munich, Merz told delegates that Europeans must prepare for a "fundamental change in relations with their transatlantic allies". He declared, "The 'Pax Americana' that has lasted for decades in Europe and Germany is largely over for us," referring to the U.S.-led peace order established after World War II.

Warning against reliance on U.S. policy

Merz cautioned against assuming that U.S. foreign policy would return to its former course after President Donald Trump's tenure. "No one should believe that this is just a short-term picture," he said, adding that the situation could become even more difficult with Trump's successor.

Noting that Washington is currently prioritizing its own interests, Merz argued that Europe's only response must be to focus on its own interests and significantly enhance its defense capabilities.

A new roadmap for Europe

Chancellor Merz outlined four key priorities for Germany and Europe in the face of shifting global balances:

  • Increasing support for Ukraine.

  • Maintaining solidarity within the European Union (EU).

  • Making intensive investments to boost the continent's defense capacity.

  • Preserving the NATO alliance "as long as possible".

Addressing U.S.-proposed drafts for ending the Ukraine war, Merz highlighted the danger of making concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Putin is not stopping. He will not stop even if Ukraine falls. The issue here is the fundamental changing of borders in Europe and the great military danger of re-establishing the old Soviet Union," he warned.

As part of efforts to end the war, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin today. Merz is scheduled to hold talks with Zelenskyy and other European leaders tomorrow.
