Hungary halts diesel shipments to Ukraine over oil dispute

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY — Hungary has officially suspended all diesel fuel shipments to Ukraine, effective immediately, until the transit of Russian crude oil to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline is fully restored. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced the decision on social media, emphasizing that Budapest can no longer guarantee Ukraine's energy security while its own supplies remain under threat.

The move comes after months of friction regarding the Druzhba pipeline, which remains a primary artery for Russian oil reaching Central Europe through Ukrainian territory. Minister Szijjarto explicitly linked the suspension of diesel exports to the restoration of crude oil flows, stating that the "diesel supply will not continue" until Hungary receives its contracted oil.

Security risks and political tensions

Szijjarto criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming that a political decision to block oil shipments has put Hungary’s energy security at significant risk. The Minister argued that Hungary cannot be expected to provide essential energy resources like diesel when its own industrial and heating requirements are being compromised by transit disruptions.

"Energy cooperation must be mutual," Szijjarto stated, adding that the relationship between the neighboring nations should be built on respect rather than political pressure.

Mutual dependence and transit roles

Hungary serves as a critical corridor for Ukraine's energy infrastructure, facilitating a large portion of the country's gas, electricity, and diesel imports. By halting diesel exports, Budapest is leveraging its role as a transit hub to demand the safe and consistent flow of Russian crude.

Industry experts warn that the suspension could significantly impact Ukraine's agricultural and logistical sectors, which rely heavily on Hungarian diesel. Currently, there is no set timeline for the resumption of fuel shipments, as the Hungarian government awaits a concrete resolution regarding the Druzhba pipeline transit fees and political barriers.
