Liviv, Ukraine — The family of fallen Ukrainian defender Roman Vasylovych Zvozda is calling for support for a petition seeking to award him the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

The petition, registered as No. 22/268730-еп on the official website of the President of Ukraine, was published on August 13, 2026. It was initiated by Vasylina Stepanivna Zvozda, the wife of the fallen soldier. In the appeal, she asks the Ukrainian state to honor her husband’s courage, dedication and sacrifice after he was killed while carrying out a combat mission in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Family appeals to preserve his memory

Zvozda’s wife appealed to the media with a request to tell the story of her husband, describing him not only as a soldier, but as a loving husband, father, son, brother, loyal friend and kind person who was always ready to help others.

For the family, Roman Zvozda will forever remain a hero. His loved ones say they want his name and story to be remembered not only by relatives, but by as many people as possible.

“I want him to be remembered not only by us, his family, but by as many people as possible,” his wife said in her appeal.

The family is also asking the public to support the petition dedicated to Roman Zvozda and help share information about his life, service and sacrifice.

Who was Roman Zvozda?

Roman Vasylovych Zvozda was born on May 26, 1981, in the village of Stilsko in Ukraine’s Lviv region. He attended school in his native village and later received vocational education in Lviv. After completing his studies, he worked in his profession and later in the construction sector.

Those close to him remember him as a hardworking, calm and responsible man for whom family, honest work and helping others mattered deeply. To his wife and children, he was a source of support. To his friends, he was someone they could rely on. To his community, he was a fellow villager who, when his country needed him, stood up to defend Ukraine.

Roman Zvozda is survived by his wife, Vasylina Stepanivna; his son, Nazarii; his daughter, Yuliia; his brother, Vasyl, who is also serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces; and his sister, Olha.

Service in the 80th Air Assault Brigade

Roman Zvozda was mobilized for military service on October 4, 2025. He served in the 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade, one of Ukraine’s combat formations.

After mobilization, he underwent military training and was later assigned to combat missions. During his service, he acquired military skills related to self-propelled artillery units and carried out duties on important sectors of the front.

The official petition states that Roman Vasylovych faithfully fulfilled his military duty and remained loyal to Ukraine, his military oath and his comrades until the end.

Final mission in the Dnipropetrovsk region

Roman Zvozda was killed on June 6, 2026, while carrying out a combat mission near the settlement of Malomykhailivka in the Synelnykove district of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

In the petition, his wife says her husband gave the most precious thing he had — his life — for Ukraine, its freedom and the peaceful future of children. For his family, his death was an irreparable loss that changed their lives forever.

Zvozda returned home “on the shield.” His community received the fallen defender with honor, forming a living corridor of remembrance and accompanying him in prayer. He was laid to rest in his native region, where he was born, grew up and returned as a soldier who gave his life for his country.

Why the family seeks the Hero of Ukraine title

In her appeal to the President of Ukraine, Zvozda’s wife asks that he be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously. For the family, this would not be only a state award, but also recognition of the sacrifice of a man who left civilian life, joined the military and died while fulfilling his combat duty.

The family believes Roman Vasylovych’s courage, loyalty to his oath, love for Ukraine and ultimate sacrifice deserve the country’s highest recognition.

The petition also carries a broader meaning: preserving memory. His relatives stress that stories like his should not disappear in the daily flow of news, because behind every name of a fallen soldier there is a life, a family, children, dreams, work, love and sacrifice.

The petition to award Roman Vasylovych Zvozda the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously can be supported on the official website of the President of Ukraine’s electronic petitions platform.

A memory that should live on

Roman Zvozda’s story is the story of a Ukrainian man who had a family, work, loved ones and a peaceful life, but after mobilization stood up to defend his country. He fulfilled his duty until the end and was killed during a combat mission.

For his wife and children, he will always remain their closest and dearest person. For his community, he is a fallen defender. For Ukraine, he is one of the names that should be preserved in national memory.

May the memory of Roman Vasylovych Zvozda be eternal.
