Trump says U.S. will send 5,000 more troops to Poland

ANKARA, Turkey — U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington will send 5,000 additional American troops to Poland, adding a new dimension to debates over the U.S. military presence in Eastern Europe.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump linked the decision to the successful election of Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, and to his personal relationship with him. The announcement came only two days after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance told reporters that a planned deployment of American forces to Poland had been delayed.

There are currently about 10,000 U.S. troops stationed in Poland. The new decision comes as Europe debates NATO’s eastern flank, the future of U.S. military commitments on the continent and the broader security balance shaped by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Trump links decision to Nawrocki

Trump directly connected the troop deployment decision to Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

In his Truth Social post, the U.S. president said he was pleased to announce the deployment of 5,000 additional troops to Poland “based on the successful election” of Nawrocki, whom he said he was proud to have supported, and on their relationship.

Trump met Nawrocki at the White House in September after the Polish president took office in the summer of 2025. During that meeting, Trump had raised the possibility of increasing the U.S. military presence in Poland.

The decision is being viewed as another example of how political relationships are influencing the Trump administration’s military planning in Europe.

Announcement follows Vance remarks

Trump’s announcement came only two days after Vice President J.D. Vance told reporters that the planned deployment of American forces to Poland had been postponed.

That timing has drawn attention because Washington has recently sent mixed signals about its military posture in Europe.

The United States has been reviewing its troop levels and security commitments across the continent. Speculation has also grown that the Trump administration could reduce the number of American troops stationed in Europe.

Despite that uncertainty, the decision to send 5,000 additional troops to Poland may be interpreted as a signal that Washington is not fully reducing deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank.

Polish president thanks Trump

Polish President Karol Nawrocki thanked Trump for his “friendship” in a post on X.

Nawrocki described the Polish-American alliance as a vital pillar of security for every Polish household and for all of Europe. He said he would continue to protect that alliance.

The Polish president also stressed that the security of Poland and Polish citizens is his top priority.

His message showed that Warsaw sees the U.S. military presence not only as a bilateral matter, but also as a strategic element of European security.

Defense minister hails strong ties

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also responded to Trump’s decision on X.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said the move confirmed that Polish-American relations are very strong and that Poland remains an exemplary and unwavering ally.

He added that it is important to work together on fundamental issues for the security of the homeland, describing it as a duty that translates into effectiveness.

The remarks underline Warsaw’s view that security cooperation with Washington remains one of the key pillars of deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank.

Tusk calls for close coordination

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said before a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that his government was trying to obtain information about, and influence, decisions made by American allies.

Tusk said U.S. partners must understand how important close and well-coordinated cooperation is for the security of Poland, Europe, the United States and the global order.

He also emphasized that the presence of American troops in Poland is part of that cooperation.

Tusk’s comments suggest that Warsaw wants to avoid uncertainty over U.S. military planning in Europe and maintain continuous diplomatic coordination with Washington.

Around 10,000 U.S. troops already in Poland

There are already about 10,000 American troops stationed in Poland.

That presence is regarded as one of the core elements of NATO’s deterrence posture against Russia on the alliance’s eastern flank. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Poland has also played a key role in Western military and logistical support for Kyiv.

Because of its geographic position, Poland has become central to NATO’s security planning in Eastern Europe.

The decision to deploy 5,000 additional U.S. troops could significantly increase the American presence in the country and send a stronger regional security message.

U.S. Europe strategy remains under debate

Trump’s decision comes amid a wider debate over Washington’s military strategy in Europe.

In recent months, analysts and officials have discussed whether the United States could reduce troop numbers in Europe, shift more security responsibility to European allies and focus more on regions such as Asia.

The Poland decision may therefore be read as a sign that the United States is not withdrawing from Europe completely, but is reshaping its military presence according to political and strategic priorities.

For NATO, the decision sends a message of continued deterrence on the eastern flank, while also reminding European allies that pressure to take on more of the defense burden is likely to continue.

Security signal for Eastern Europe

The deployment of 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland is a strong security signal for Eastern European countries.

As Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, Poland, the Baltic states and other NATO members on the eastern flank view the American presence as critical to deterrence.

For Warsaw, Trump’s decision means that bilateral ties with Washington remain strong and that the United States continues to attach importance to Poland’s security.

However, uncertainty over broader U.S. military planning in Europe remains. For that reason, the place of this decision within NATO’s wider strategy will be closely watched in the coming period.
