WASHINGTON, USA — President Donald Trump warned the Iranian regime that "time is running out" while deploying a massive naval fleet to the region, signaling a potential military confrontation.
The escalating rhetoric follows rumors of a "Venezuela-style" operation targeting top Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as Washington demands a total cessation of Tehran's nuclear program and a return to the negotiating table.
Military threats and naval deployment
President Trump intensified pressure on the Iranian regime by deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying strike group to the region. In a social media post, Trump emphasized that Tehran must "quickly sit at the negotiating table" for a fair agreement, while making it clear that the U.S. will not allow the continuation of a nuclear program.
Trump compared the current naval force to the fleet previously sent to Venezuela, stating it is "larger" and "ready, willing, and able" to fulfill its mission with force. He referenced the previous "Operation Midnight Hammer" which caused "massive destruction" and warned that a subsequent attack would be significantly worse. This has fueled speculation that the U.S. military may target key leaders of the regime, similar to the operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolas Maduro.
Signals of a preemptive strike
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the Iranian regime is at its weakest point, with a collapsing economy and resurgent internal protests. While noting that no final decision on a strike has been made, Rubio stated that the U.S. remains prepared for any Iranian aggression.
Highlighting that approximately 40,000 American troops are within range of Iran, Rubio warned that Washington could launch a "preemptive strike" if it becomes apparent that Tehran intends to attack U.S. targets or Israel. Political observers note that unlike Venezuela, the Iranian regime possesses a more entrenched structure, particularly the Revolutionary Guard, which may lead to a more complex conflict.
Tehran's "fingers on the trigger" response
The Iranian leadership has responded with its own set of threats, placing the military on high alert. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Iranian military is ready for a strong response to any potential U.S. attack, emphasizing that their "fingers are on the trigger".
Araghchi clarified that while Iran remains open to a fair and equitable nuclear agreement based on mutual benefit and free from intimidation, it will not surrender its right to peaceful nuclear technology. Meanwhile, Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warned that any military action would be considered the start of a war, promising an "unprecedented and total" response targeting Tel Aviv and all supporters of the aggressor.
European support for regime isolation
The European Union is reportedly preparing to classify the Revolutionary Guard as a "terrorist organization" to increase pressure on the regime. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the escalation of military threats, stating that a regime that relies solely on terror and violence to stay in power has "numbered days".
Merz highlighted the thousands of deaths caused by the regime's suppression of internal protests, arguing that the leadership has lost its legitimacy to govern. As the EU moves toward formalizing its stance, the diplomatic and economic isolation of Tehran is expected to deepen in the coming weeks.
