German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during his official visit to India, strongly condemned the use of force against protesters in Iran, describing the crackdown as "disproportionate" and "brutal" while praising the bravery of those seeking freedom.
Speaking in Ahmedabad following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chancellor Merz addressed the ongoing unrest that has swept across Iran for over two weeks. He issued a direct appeal to the Iranian leadership, stating that a government's primary duty is to protect its citizens rather than threaten them with state-sponsored violence.
"Violence is a sign of weakness"
Merz characterized the Tehran administration's response to civil dissent as a strategic failure. "I condemn the violence directed by the Iranian leadership against its own people in the strongest possible terms," Merz told reporters. He argued that the use of lethal force is "not a show of strength, but a sign of weakness" and demanded an immediate end to the hostilities.
The Chancellor expressed his admiration for the protesters, stating that their peaceful demonstrations for freedom are a fundamental right. He emphasized that the international community is closely monitoring the situation, noting that the courage displayed on the streets of Iran has garnered global respect.
Death toll surpasses 540
According to data released by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the unrest has resulted in at least 544 fatalities, including 47 security personnel. Furthermore, approximately 10,700 individuals have reportedly been detained since the beginning of the demonstrations.
Chancellor Merz has historically maintained a firm stance against the current Iranian administration. In previous statements, he has labeled the leadership a "terror regime" and expressed that a transition of power would be beneficial for both the Iranian people and global security. These latest remarks in India further solidify Germany's critical diplomatic position toward Tehran.
