Columnist Ahmet Takan: Bahceli signals new PKK/SDG dialogue
Columnist Ahmet Takan analyzes MHP leader Devlet Bahceli’s latest group meeting, suggesting potential shifts regarding SDG and YPG within the "peace process" framework.

Prominent columnist Ahmet Takan has suggested that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahceli may be signaling a future negotiation role for the SDG and YPG within Türkiye’s evolving "solution process," despite his current harsh rhetoric against these groups.
Analyzing Bahceli’s latest parliamentary group meeting, Takan highlighted the unusual, somber atmosphere of the session. While Bahceli publicly criticized U.S. President Trump and condemned SDG leader Mazlum Abdi as a "puppet of Israel," Takan argues that the MHP leader's emphasis on Abdullah Ocalan as the "founding leader" of the PKK suggests a roadmap where Ocalan’s influence is used to liquidate or reshape these Syrian affiliates.
A shift in political rhetoric
Takan noted a significant change in the atmosphere of the MHP meeting, describing it as having a "mourning-like air" compared to previous sessions. Bahceli avoided his characteristic high-pitched tones and did not signal his group to stand for applause, resulting in uncharacteristically weak responses from the audience. This shift in demeanor coincided with Bahceli’s reiterated loyalty to the role of imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, whom he once again referred to as the "founding leader."
The "Ankara Table" and the SDG/YPG factor
In his analysis for Yeniçağ, Takan pointed out that while Bahceli currently calls for the dissolution of the SDG and YPG, his previous radical shifts in policy suggest a similar "pivot" could occur. Takan reminded readers that Bahceli, who once threw a hangman's noose at the government for not executing Ocalan, recently invited the same figure to speak at the Grand National Assembly. He argued that Bahceli's rejection of negotiating with Mazlum Abdi—while insisting that the "sole interlocutor" is Ocalan—actually lays the groundwork for Ocalan to dictate terms to the Syrian branches.
Future prospects for Ocalan
The analysis concluded with an observation regarding the future status of the PKK’s leadership. Takan noted a prevailing "scent" in the political air suggesting that Abdullah Ocalan might eventually be "retired" from his active organizational role as part of a final settlement. He warned that Bahceli’s current dismissal of negotiating with the SDG might one day transform into a formal invitation to the Parliament, paralleling his previous unexpected political maneuvers.
