BAGHDAD, IRAQ — Iraq's prolonged period of political uncertainty has come to an end after the parliament elected Nizar Amedi, the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as the country's new president following a decisive second-round vote.
The election marks a critical turning point for the Middle Eastern nation, which has been grappling with a severe political deadlock for months. According to reports from the Anadolu Agency, Amedi's victory is expected to accelerate the formation of a new government, a crucial step for stabilizing the country's administrative and economic landscape.
First round fails to yield a winner
The path to the presidency required multiple voting sessions within the parliament. During the initial round of voting, none of the candidates managed to secure the constitutional threshold of 220 votes, representing a two-thirds majority of the assembly.
Due to the lack of a decisive winner, the electoral process advanced to a second round, featuring a run-off between the two candidates who garnered the highest number of votes in the first phase.
A decisive victory in the second round
In the second round of voting, Nizar Amedi faced off against rival candidate Musenna Emin. Amedi emerged victorious with a commanding lead, securing 227 votes from the attending lawmakers. His opponent, Emin, received only 15 votes, while 7 ballots were declared invalid by the parliamentary electoral committee.
The parliamentary session witnessed a slight decrease in attendance between the two rounds. While 252 lawmakers were present for the first round of voting, the number dropped slightly to 249 deputies during the crucial second round. Despite the minor dip in participation, Amedi comfortably achieved the absolute majority required to claim the presidency.
With the presidential seat now filled, Iraqi political factions are anticipated to shift their focus toward nominating a prime minister and establishing a functional cabinet to address the nation's pressing challenges.
