Cyprus pushes for NATO membership amid regional conflict

NICOSIA, CYPRUS — The Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has reignited its push for NATO membership as security concerns escalate following recent regional conflicts involving Iran.

President Nikos Christodoulides announced that preparations have commenced across military, operational, and administrative levels to align the country with the alliance's standards. Speaking to the Greek television channel Skai, Christodoulides expressed a strong desire for immediate integration, stating, "If it were possible, we would apply tomorrow". However, he acknowledged that current political conditions and the long-standing stance of Turkey remain significant obstacles to a formal application at this time.

Turkey maintains blockade on membership

The primary hurdle for Cyprus is the requirement for unanimous approval from all current NATO members. Turkey has consistently blocked Nicosia's aspirations, labeling the move "unacceptable". According to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, such an initiative would disrupt the sensitive balance regarding the Cyprus issue and negatively impact ongoing negotiation processes.

Former European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas supported the bid, arguing that Cyprus's entry into NATO is a necessary next step that would "significantly increase stability in Southern Europe". Despite being aware of Ankara's opposition, Christodoulides first officially voiced this ambition in November 2024, noting that the country would submit its application when the timing is right.

Escalating tensions and military support

The urgency for membership intensified after the British base at Akrotiri was targeted by Iranian-made drones on 2 March. This incident prompted several European nations, including Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, to deploy warships to the region to safeguard the island’s security.

In response to the strikes, British Defense Minister John Healey met with his Cypriot counterpart, Vasilis Palmas, to discuss strengthening the island's air defense capabilities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer further announced that the United Kingdom would deploy Wildcat anti-drone helicopters and the warship HMS Dragon to support regional stability.
