ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Turkish representative Fenerbahçe is set to host England’s Nottingham Forest today in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 play-off, marking the club's 299th official match in European competitions. According to AA, the Yellow-Navies are seeking a decisive victory at their home stadium in Kadıköy to secure a strategic advantage before the return leg in England on February 26.

Under the guidance of head coach Domenico Tedesco, Fenerbahçe aims to continue its recent streak of success in European tiers. The club has consistently advanced past the group stages over the last four seasons, reaching the quarter-finals once and the round of 16 twice during that span.

Team news and tactical absences

Fenerbahçe enters the critical clash with two notable absences in the squad. Midfielder Edson Alvarez remains sidelined following ankle surgery and will not be available for selection. Additionally, while Archie Brown has recovered from his injury and resumed training with the team, Tedesco is reportedly unwilling to risk him as a starter. Brown may be included in the matchday squad but is not expected to see significant playtime.

Disciplinary risks for the second leg

Disciplinary concerns also loom over the Turkish side. Nelson Semedo and Oğuz Aydın, both currently carrying two yellow cards, are at risk of suspension. Should either player receive a booking during today's match, they will be ineligible for the second leg in Nottingham next week. The technical staff has reportedly emphasized the importance of discipline to avoid losing key personnel for the away fixture.

Historical performance in European tiers

Fenerbahçe's record in the UEFA Europa League format remains impressive. In the 102 matches played since the tournament was rebranded, the club has secured 49 wins, 31 draws, and 22 losses. Throughout these encounters, they have scored 146 goals while conceding 103.

When including the era of the UEFA Cup, Fenerbahçe has appeared in a total of 156 matches in Europe's secondary competition. Their overall tally in this tier stands at 67 wins, 41 draws, and 48 losses, with 218 goals scored and 194 conceded. The club relies heavily on its home-turf momentum, having established a formidable reputation against European opponents at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in recent years.
