CALIFORNIA, USA — Turkish national tennis player Zeynep Sönmez has advanced to the second round of the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament in California, United States.

Ranking 80th in the world, Sönmez secured a historic victory by defeating world number 51, American McCartney Kessler, with sets of 7-6 and 6-0 in the first round. With this impressive 2-0 win, she became the first Turkish tennis player to ever win a main draw match at Indian Wells.

"I am happy with my performance"

Speaking to Tennis Channel after her milestone victory, Sönmez shared her thoughts on the challenging start to the match.

"It was a tough match. I didn't start well. Then I played closer. I think I did a good job, I'm happy with my performance," the national star stated.

The 23-year-old athlete will face Russian player Anna Kalinskaya, currently ranked 22nd in the world, in the second round. The highly anticipated match is expected to take place on March 6.

Building on past successes

Sönmez has been consistently delivering some of the biggest achievements in Turkish tennis history. In July 2025, she competed in the third round of Wimbledon, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Prior to that, she claimed her second WTA women's singles title by winning a tournament in Mexico in November 2024.

Reflecting on her recent experiences during the Tennis Channel interview, Sönmez expressed her joy regarding her previous victories. "Winning the Mérida Open was very special. I was there last week, and being there always affects my tennis in a good way," she explained.

She emphasized her current physical and mental readiness:

"I felt really good about my fight last week. I think this affected my performance here too. Being on the court makes me feel good. I'm playing well and want to maintain it."

Embracing the pressure of expectations

When asked whether the immense crowd support puts pressure on her, Sönmez offered a candid and mature response.

"Yes, it brings this pressure. I am aware. So many people are supporting me. There are also many expectations. I am grateful for this, and this pressure is truly a great privilege. I need to get used to it," she concluded.
