CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, ITALY — Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been disqualified from the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned his specialized helmet featuring portraits of Ukrainian athletes killed during the Russian invasion.
According to EuroNews, the IOC prohibited the use of the helmet, which contained no political slogans or symbols but displayed portraits of athletes who have died since early 2022. Heraskevych, who refused to compete without the tribute, described the disqualification as the "price of maintaining honor" in a statement released on social media.
Broader crackdown on Ukrainian symbols
Heraskevych is not the only athlete facing restrictions at the Milano-Cortina games. Freestyle skier Kateryna Kotsar was reportedly disqualified for having "Be brave like Ukrainians" written on her helmet, while short-track speed skater Oleh Handei was told to remove a quote from poet Lina Kostenko.
Handei explained that the IOC labeled the quote—"Where there is heroism, there is no ultimate defeat"—as a political slogan. "I translated it for them word for word; it is not a political slogan. These are words for the motivation of myself, my team, and my country," Handei said.
The Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, also voiced his support for the athletes on social media, posting a photo of Heraskevych's helmet with the caption: "Remembering is not a violation."
